Thats the problem with

Thats the problem with manufacturers, they want to sell you the whole mechanism. Did you ask them if they had a defective unit that may have a good gear on it? I works sometimes. try to speak to a service manager or parts manager. Also on the mechanism, it should have a small sticker on it on who really makes the unit. You can get the unit number and look that up online. I have found parts this way. But dont hold your breath, as some manufacturers will not budge at all. Thats when you need to start writting letters to all concerned. Good Luck and please let us know how you made out.

Did you ever get your gear?

Did you ever get your gear?  I just bought a DPS-9.1 that needs a drive motor, so i'm searching for a Toshiba that is rumored to have the same mechanism.  If you are still in need, i'll have a gear for you cheap!

The main problem is that the

The main problem is that the gear is not a "field replaceable part" and as such does not have a part number.  The smallest replaceable part for that unit is the optics assembly.  The only way to get a gear for this is to find another unit that has failed and get the gear from there.  The same probably goes for the motor although you can sometimes order just  a replacement motor.  Also, it is very unusual for a gear to break.  Can you describe what gear is damaged and what the damage is?

RE: motor:  What motor are you looking for?  Do you have a part number?

Wouldn't you know it, I got

Wouldn't you know it, I got my DPS-9.1 all apart, purchased a Toshiba SD-3750 on ebay for $30shipped, because it has the same dvd mechanism, and it turns out my DVD mechanism in my DPS-9.1 is fine.  I had them completely swapped, and when i booted the DPS-9.1 up, nothing.  So i took the old 'bad' mechanism, and plugged it in the SD-3750, and voila' the motor spins up fine.  SO i have some 'other' board based problem.  I tested the cables, so it's not that, they worked fine in the Toshiba.  Now i suppose i'm stuck going to a repair shop, since i dont' have the means (or brains) to test the boards.  Now i may just sell the whole SD-3750 to try and recoup my $30, or my kids just got a new progressive scan DVD player for their bedroom-LOL.  Sorry Bob, but at the moment, i'll skip parting my Tosh out until i know i can't use anything from it.  If you hit this thread: http://www.audioasylum.com/scripts/t.... you'll see alist of DVD players from toshiba that have the dvd mechanism you need, it's quite simple to swap out the whole thing, like Dan said, y ou probably won't be able to just replace the gear.  RE-MOTOR, I didnt' write down the number on it Dan, as i figured i'd have to swap the whole mechanism, and now, as i mentioned, that is not the problem, the machine is not sending a signal to spin it up...

 Thanks all! howie

Check the power supply,

Check the power supply, specifically the 12V supply.  If the voltage regulator is defective, the motor won't work.  Also, look for filter caps on hte 12V line or the 5V line.
