Hi benzgirl,

Hi benzgirl,

I'd be happy to help you get your cable box
connected. Thanks for providing the model number for the plasma, it
will help. Can you tell us a little more about the cable box you have?
Brand and model are preferable. It may also be helpful to know what
cable service you have.

Well, since there are quite a

Well, since there are quite a few different RCA DirecTV boxes, I'll have to give you the general overview.

Your TV has a variety of inputs, ranging from composite video to HDMI. All of these connections offer different levels of video performance. To get the most out of your gear, you want to use the best connection possible for each device.

Here's a list of connections, with ratings from best to worst.

  1. HDMI (Small flat connector)
  2. DVI (Big newer computer style connector)
  3. VGA (15 pin computer style connector)
  4. Component (Red, green, blue RCA cables)
  5. S-video (round with pins)
  6. Composite (Yellow RCA)
  7. RF (screw on coaxial jack)

To learn more about these different connections read some of the different articles in the Wire and Cables section.

Your TV supports nearly all of these connections, so you'll need to decided based on what the RCA box has to offer. If S-video is the best it has, that's what you'll want to use. This would also mean it is not a high-definition satellite receiver, so you may want to consider upgrading the box to one that is down the road. This will help you get the best picture from your new EDTV.

To connect the receiver, connect the appropriate video cable(s) to the output on the RCA box, and plug into a matching input on the TV (make a mental note of the input label you've used). Don't forget to connect audio, too! Then, using your TV remote, select the input that you plugged the receiver to, and begin watching your source.

If you have a newer HD box, you may want to take a trip to the RCA box menu and look for any settings that may need to be changed. For example, you may need to tell the box your TV is Widescreen instead of square.

Good luck!

The instructions I've

The instructions I've provided above will get you all hookedup. The sat receiver you have only sports composite, S-video, and RF connections. S-video will give the best picture possible, so I recommend you use that.

This is an s-video cable plug

This is an s-video cable plug.  And yes it plugs directly from the back of the satillite(not cable) box, into the s-video jack on the back of the TV set.  If it does not work, you may need to switch it to s-video input, as some sets you do on the TV set, and you do that by going into the menu and selecting s-video or video input.

On the remote control, you

On the remote control, you will see a button in the very top right corner labeled TV/VIDEO. Press this button repeatedly to switch between the varous video inputs (Ignore the button labeled TV INPUT in the top left, as that key switches between the various tuner options). Make sure the satellite receiver is on, and stop pressing the TV/VIDEO button when you see the picture from the satellite box.
