Recently I noticed a lot of fuzz around my ProScans vents (36" chassis CTC179). In an effort to reduce dust in the household I decided to clean the TV inside and out. I removed the plastic housing and vacumed as well as blew pressurized air throughout the unit. Because a large amount of fuzz remained hung to many connectors I removed them, cleaned them, and reinstalled them. Upon reassembly I noted my TV's picture is very dark and it is even very hard to see the on-screen menu. Using the picture quality instructions I was able to follow along and adjust all the controls but only experienced minor improvement. The screen is still very dark and very colorful, all other aspects such as sound seem fine. I even tried the remote's reset which is supposed to return settings to original. No help there either. Prior to cleaning my TV it worked fine. Does anybody have any idea what I can do to restore normal operation?
Inside the set is a block with a big red wire attached to it, that runs up to the side of the picture tube. On the side of this block are two controls. One will say "Focus" or have an "F' by it, and the other one will say "Screen" or have an 's" by it. With the TV set one, slowly turn up the screen control till you see thin white lines in the picture. Then back it down till the thin white lines go away. Rock the focus control back and forth to adjust and tweek the focus. You may have hit or moved the controls when cleaning the TV set. Be very carefull and please dont touch anything else, as there is alot of HIGH VOLTAGE inside this TV set. If that does not work good for you, unplug the set and make sure all of the plugs and connectors are pluged in straight and in all the way. Good Luck and let us know how you made out.
Larry,
I followed the red wire and found a unit with 3 screws They were marked EF1, EF2, and G2 (top to bottom). The EF screws were on an embossment that said FOCUS. So, I assumed that G2 must have been the SCREEN. Anyway, I followed your advice, the G2 screw did nothing, while the EF2 screw did improve the pictures focus. Unfortunately the screen is still so dark that working the menu is almost impossible. Any other ideas?
Thank you for your assistance.
Greg
Make sure the CRT board is all the way onto the CRT. There may be a small pin plug that fell out or is loose and maybe marked G2 on the CRT board And or there is another wire where the big red wire is, its a white wire going to the CRT board. Make sure thats plugged in.
Larry,
You nailed it! The CRT board was NOT fully seated and a pin was bent. I guess I knocked in to it while cleaning. After straightening the pin the set works normally. Thank you so much for your directions, I would never have looked there if you had not suggested it. Anything I can do for you?
Thanks again,
Greg Rommel
LOL No gregor, send the feedback to the editor saying how happy you are is thanks enough, and your thanks is also. Glad to assist you. Also spread the word about techlore is also great!
Also now you know how to tweek the brightness as well as the focus!
Larry,
Yes, thanks to you I now know how to make these important adjustments. And, as you are no doubt aware, the white lines now appear when making a brightness adjustment. I sent a "feedback" as you requested, and referenced your valuable assistance. Thanks again,
Gregor
Hi Larry,
I read your assistance with gregor and wanted to see if you can help me with my Proscan Tube tv bought in 1995, when you try to turn it on, it makes a noise, blinks on the screen and then turns off. Then the tv tries to start 3 more times. Do you have any idea what is going on?

SherrilLarkin, your problem is not going to be so easty to fix. It is one of there faults that occour in this TV set. It is either a bad flyback transfor, also known as the high voltage transformer, A shorted horizontal output transistor, or there is a small coil marked L14101 from the base of the horizontal output transistor to the secondary side of the horizontal driver transformer. This coil need s to be taken out and the leads scrapped of enamel and reinserted and resoldered. it turns out, too much enamel was put on this coil and made it fail after being in the field for a while. My guess is the flyback and or the coil problem. These are problems that should only be repaired by a trained tech, as there is alot of high voltage prent in this circuit, even when the set is unplugged. Good Luck and let us know how you made out with your TV set.
Larry,
I hope you get a chance to look into this blog again - in hopes that you might answer my question - I have a Proscan too which only recently started ) ( on the screen. I suppose that this would be called the pincushion adjustment? Or would this be something else? Obviously the adjustment cannot be made from the remote or from any "screws" on the back - so what do yousuggest?
George
Bnotes what model do you have and chassis number. There are alot of differant Proscans. Do you know how to work on printed circuit boards and solder on solid state equipment? A picussion problem is usually a bad capacitor or a bad transistor. This is a high voltage area in the sweep circuit, and can be dangerous to work on if you don't have any TV repair knowledge. Also you will most likely need a schematic diagram to check where in the circuit the trouble is.

On nov24 2006 in this forum you where help a guy out talking about a Block with a big red wire attached to it.
I have a proscan model PS36125 and the unit you mentioned on my TV is burned and when you try to turn on the TV that block sparks come out where that wire is attached and the set will not turn on.What is it called? and is it available?
Larry is no longer with us

Its called a flyback transformer and it may just need to be seated better.
