Sony KV-32S45 Blinking

I have a nine year old Sony that has started to blink (black then back to picture). At first it was sporatic, now it is constantly blinking. Sony requested an onsite repair visit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it could be an issue with the cables, possibly a loose connection causing intermittent signal loss. Does this only happen with one source like the tuner, or is this behavior exhibited by all connected sources?

Just a quick note that may (or may not) help.

I have a Sony KV-2063R TV that is has a similar
problem. In the beginning, the flashing was occasional and would stop if powered off for a
short time. All of a sudden, the flashing or flickering was non-stop and nothing cured it.
Personally, I'd describe it more as a flicker -
but on mine, the sound is affected.

I've been told, the problem was as a result of poor solder joints during manufacturing. For
some reason, many of Sony's TVs ended up having
bad solder connections in the tuner module.

I'm NOT sure if your model was included in that
production run or not but that may be the case.

The cure (so I've been told) is to remove the tuner module and resolder ALL ground connections.
Replacing the tuner with a new one "apparently" won't do any good since they could have the same
defects.

I haven't had the time to try it yet and had a
diagram showing the tuner locations to check
but can't seem to locate it again. If you or (anyone else) has that info - please pass it my way.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
R. Earl

Another common cause of this

Another common cause of this in Sony TV's is....believe it or not, the picture tube itself.

Sony uses a circuit called "IK detection" in all their Trinitron models. Basically what it does is self-adjust the color before putting a picture on the screen, however when the tube is going out, the set cannot self-compensate for the imbalance of the colors (Red, blue and green) and the picture blinks on and off until it can (somtimes after prelonged warm-up), or indefinately.

A quick way to determine this is to check for the following symptoms:
1)Screen has one dominant color (Red, blue or green) when the picture is on.
2)The picture stays on AFTER the set has warmed up for a period of time (solder connection related symptoms get worse as the set warms up in almost every case).
3)The set has a history of flashing before holding the image for some time and has slowly gotten worse.
4)The flashing is at a regular rythm - like once a second(solder connection symptoms are usually sudden and have no regular patterns or rythm).

Sadly if your sets have "all of the above" the cure is usually another TV. The cost of a picture tube, the shipping and handling charges, and the labor for installing one are usually more than the cost of a whole new set.
