I am new to mp3 devices and have a no-name device that can recharge by usb or by a recenty bought mains usb charger. The only instruction about recharging the inbuilt battery is to "without fail observe the maximum allowed charging time". Presumably I could shorten battery life otherwise. Any help would be welcome.

You haven't really provided much to go on, and without knowing more about the device it will be hard to give you specifics. As a general rule, 8 hours on USB at 500 mA/h should be the maximum charging time for just about any portable electronic device, but your device could need far less than that, particularly on an AC charger.
Is there any indicator or guage on the player that indicates the battery status (empty, full, 50% whatever), or are you required to use the force?
Hi Matt, Thanksfor reply. As I said I'm new to mp3 and this player was on offer from Daily newspaper - Very cheap, very basic, and probably not to be taken as a proper starter! It's about 2 x 1.5 inches and has no trade name or markings except on, off, and symbols for play, pause and so on. Must be about half the size of the very earliest ipod. It sounds OK!. I will take your advice about charging from the USB soket on the laptop but I wanted to know whether the mains charger (from Silvercrest) would be faster. The data leaflet on that is max output 1 amp.,5.2V. It has a green l.e.d. I charged the player for an hour but the l.e.d. stayed lit, so Ii, not sure if it wouldl go out when charging is complete. The leaflet doesn't say.
