I have old toshiba television very large but cannot get
menu button to find channels it only displays
/brightness/colour/sharpness/contrast./volume ... I lost the
remote control and am using a universal one this has details of
set up but no diagrams to say which buttons mean the menu one can
anyone help me

Many "universal" remotes only support the basic functions of many devices, and often the menu command is omitted. If it doesn't support menu functions, you could try and find a universal remote that does, try to find a friend or relative that has a Toshiba remote that works with your TV, or try to acquire an original replacement remote.
If you don't like any of those options, you could skip using the TV tuner by connecting an external tuning device, like a cable box or VCR.
