Sony KP-57WS500 Green screen flash / arcing / shut-down

Hi,

I have a KP-57WS500 that I bought used and the green crt / tube showed light vertical retrace lines on the set. I adjusted the screen voltage on the green crt to just remove the retrace lines. A few months later the TV would flash a green screen and a snap / arc / pop could be heard inside. The TV will then shutdown sometimes, but not all of the time.

The green flash will sometimes happen 4 times a week and then sometimes only 1 time a week. I then tried adjusting the green crt screen voltage again and I saw an arc from the green tube or the CG board.

It seems like adjusting the screen voltage increases the voltage to the crt and the increased voltage is causing the arc, correct? It seems to me that adjusting the screen voltages after the set is made
only masks another problem. That they were really there to adjust the
CRTs on a new set or a set that had a new CRT installed. Is that a
correct statement?

I ordered a used CG board for it and I am going to install it this week. I figure it is the CG board or the green CRT is on it's way out. From my description, does it sound more like the CRT being the problem or the CG board?

I have already installed new convergence ICs in the TV a few years ago with Sanyo chips. It did have a convergence problem at that time. I repair welding machine electronics. Is replacing the CRT something a DIYer could handle. I can do all the work and have the electronics installation knowledge, but do I need any special tools to adjust the CRT? I am guessing it is not just a bolt in deal even though the CRT I would be installing is used. Can I just use the service manual and remote to enter a mode that is used to line it up? The manual shows 3 adjustments (yok, tilt, magnet).

Thanks.

are you turning the green

are you turning the green screen control counterclockwise?

if you are and it still flashes green then you have a bad green tube shorted out

unless the focus block component is defect

It is turned as the manual

It is turned as the manual describes it to be set. Turning it down more cause green retrace lines on the screen.

I think either the CG board is going or more likely the green tube is going. I have read the WS500 models had tube problems. Have you ever replaced a tube and adjusted it?

all sony proj tv from 2001 to

all sony proj tv from 2001 to 2004 have poor design tubes

all were bad.......if you search online you will see

no other brand tv has problems iwht tubes like sont during those prod dates

turning the screen control counterclockwise should reduce volatage and get rid of retrace lines..if its not then yes you have a bad tube

repalcing a tube is not hard at all..pretty simple but finding the tube wont be easy

good luck

Turning the green screen pot

Turning the green screen pot down (counter clockwise) causes green retrace lines to appear. Turning it up to the point where the retrace lines disappear (as per manual) causes the green flash every so often. It doesn't happen all the time.

Looking at the part list for the TVs. I see that the 510 and 520 uses a different part number tube. I was guessing that they fixed them or made them better in the 510/520 model as compared to the 500 model. Is this true? Are the later more reliable.
I will keep an eye out for a used complete WS500 model, but if the tubes are more reliable in the 510/520 then I may consider junking this TV and getting one of them.

Did you ever find resolution

Did you ever find resolution to your problem? I seem to be having something similar happening and am debating how to approach the problem. From the sounds of it I don't have as much technical experience as you, though I'm not exactly a novice either. I feel as if it's most likely the green CRT but haven't found any reliable instructions for replacing it and my user's manual has somehow vanished. I'm getting 8 blinks from the standby light after it shuts down suggesting it could be a dboard problem based on the standby codes. I would prefer to fix it myself but I'm wary of getting in too deep and having wasted money trying to sort out this problem that could just be invested in a new set.
