GE 32" power cycling

I have a 32" GE. when I try to turn it on, you can hear the click coming from a relay inside it and feel the static from the crt, then it goes off. This cycle repeats itself several times and then stops, but the picture never comes on and you never hear any audio. the set is less than 2 years old and I've never had any isusues before. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you feel static on the

If you feel static on the front of the set, then the HI voltage circuits trying to come on but the automatic shutdown circuit is shutting off the TV set because the HIgh Voltage is too high or it detects an overload in the circuit and shuts down as a safety precaution. If your not a technician, with no TV repair experience, please seek out a profesional technician to assist you with this repair, as this can be a very dangerous thing to mess with . Let us know what the tech found if you could please. Good Luck

when I spoke to the "GE

when I spoke to the "GE certified repair facility" they told me it was probably a bad relay that would cost me less than $20, BUT for them to put it in, I would have to pay them $160. The way they answered my question, it sounded as though it was a common problem with these sets. No, I have limited experience with TV's, but I am a computer repair technician with some experiece working with monitors. If I could find out which relay was bad, I feel I could do it without injuring myself.

After checking my notes, I

After checking my notes, I found that I forgot to mention that there is a capacitor in the relay circuit that causes this problem in the standby power supply on RCA and GE sets.  The differant models all have differant capacitor numbers on the board so the best way to find this cap,and theres no way to really tell if this is the problem without checking it, would be to get the service manual.  Pull out the capacitor , replace it or check it.  A relay is nothing more then a coil, so its good or bad, but there could also be a problem inside the relay with the contacts that would go bad when the close from the current between them.

Well, I think I'll try to

Well, I think I'll try to find a shop near me that can check it out with out charging as much for labor. I realize everyone needs to be paid for their work, but that seems like a premium price.

Thanks for your input.

What I have found so far,

What I have found so far, they say it will cost the same no matter where I take it and a couple have said the exact same thing you did, something with the power supply.

I will definately let you know what I find out. I might just buy a new TV. I didn't read the warranty info well enough to see there was basically NO warranty on this thing. At least the Zenith I had lasted 10 years. Are GE TV's really that poorly made?

Well Its all in the matter of

Well Its all in the matter of taste?lol  RCA And GE used to be two differant manufacturers till GE sold there TV department to RCA.  Then RCA was bought up[ by Thompson Corp in Canada. It in my opinion that RCA or GE Are very poorly designed since then, as theres always something with them. Like with  The RCA sets with the on board tuners?  Oh man what a bomb those were.  There poor soldering and material matching was so bad it caused Tuning problems, vertical problems ,sound problems, as well as eeprom problems..  The next generation of RCA's and GE sets had a problem with the horizontal output transformer that would blow out and short out the horizontal output transistor. they also had a small coil off the horizontal driver transformer going to the horizontal output transistor that when the manufacturer made the part, they didnt leave enough Un-enameled wire at the ends of it so after a while you would get intermittant shutting off of the set then comming back on and in some cases burning out the resistpr that feeds b+ to the trasformer.  Like I said this is ONLY a matter of opinion!!!  I Happen to like Mitsubishi,or pioneer sets.
