JVC GR-D271U Not uploading to pc

I have had this mini dv camera for about a year and I cannot get it to upload the video to my computer.  Although I have gotten it to do it once and now it won't do it anymore.  I don't think my 2 year old Dell is recognizing the device anymore.  I have tried via the cable that came with the camera and I also bought a firewire card and cable.  I honestly can't remember which worked as I was trying both of them repeatedly for days on end.  Any help would be much appreciated.

If your using a USB port,

If your using a USB port, does anything else work in that port? as maybe you lost the configeration to that port?  If this is the case Dell should have USB software on their website to get you back going.  If the port does work then uninstall the camera's software and reinstall it. Good Luck

I was able to use the USB

I was able to use the USB port via the memory function on the computer to upload still photos, but as soon as I turn it to the Video function it won't recognize it.  I can't seem to find my camera software so I emailed JVC.  I am hoping maybe that will help.  Thanks for all your help.

Hi Larry,

Hi Larry,

I finally got a reply from JVC.  It was a bit confusing I guess.  Here is what they wrote:

The JVC camcorder has a port labeled "DV In/Out".  This port is the IEEE1394 Firewire/DV Port.  The cable that connects to this port and also to a DV Connector Port on the computer is called an IEEE1394 Firewire/DV Cable.

All you can do is transfer still images via USB. You will have to have a DV wire connect to fire wire (ieee1394, iLink) capture card/port. Not all computers come with fire wire ports installed.

To transfer video to your computer you would need to purchase a video capture card with video editing software. The video capture card allows you to save video to your hard drive. The video editing software determines how and where it is saved.

Depending on what camera you have, a few different options are available to you. For more information on IEEE 1394 connectors locate the websites of manufacturers of this hardware. The following manufacturers fire wire products were tested with JVC camcorders: Pinnacle Systems, Belkin, Orange Micro, Digital Origin, and Ratoc.

Please be advised that compatibility of JVC camera with fire wire card may also depends on your particular computer specifications/hardware settings. Even though we tested the above hardware and bundled software there will be always exceptions and JVC doesn’t guarantee that computer, fire wire card and JVC camcorder will interface flawlessly in everybody’s case.

I guess I am a bit confused. I did purchase  Firewire card for my laptop.  It is not one of the mentioned brands.  So do I buy one of those brands?  They didn't mention anything about the software I asked about concerning the camera.  Just said I need to go out and buy more.  I am just frustrated. Why don't these companies sell this stuff all together so that people don't have to go through this hassle?  Maybe I just chose the wrong company.  Sorry, just venting.  Any help would be wonderful.

Ellen,  Im sorry you are

Ellen,  Im sorry you are having so much trouble getting this taken care of.  So you say you got a video capture card.?  Did you not get the software that went with the card?  If so install it and go to the setup after you install it and see if you can get the software to see. the camcorder.  Did you get the firewall/dv cable? If not your going to have to get the proper cord and then the software for the video capture card should see the camcorder. Also read this from Ron http://www.techlore.com/article/10257/. if you need any more assitance Please ask.  We will get you going. Good Luck

Larry, I did it! I finally

Larry, I did it! I finally did it!  I had to uninstall the card via the device manager and it picked up my camera right away.  I don't know why I didn't think of doing that before.  I greatly appreciate all your help!
