Hi, I am new to this form, so please forgive me if am in wrong catigory.
I have a Toshiba SD 34VB dvd/vcr combo. The Vcr side of it works fine but the dvd does not. When you try to play the dvd the disc does not turn and comes up that no disc is installed with HELLO on the display. Some times when it does play, but only for about 30s and then stops.
I have opened it up check all connections, dry joints and burns, no obvious damage to any cans or chips or cracks in the tracks.
Any Help Welcome Please.

Have you tryed to clean the lens of the laser on the DVD? A disc-washer or disc cleaner will do the job most of the time, but sometimes the unit won't let the cleaning disc operate, so the only other thing to do is take apart the unit with it unplugged of course, and take a cotton Cue Tip, dabbed light in alcohol, and lightly, ever so lightly, in a swirling motion on top of the laser lens assembly and then take the dry side and do the same thing. Let it dry and try it. If it works then you had a film of dust or grease ect over the lens. if it dosent work them My friend its time to seek out a repair shop as you could have a servo problem such as an Tracking/focus gain or offset problem or even a laser alighnment. Also could have a bad spindle motor or a slider control circuit. These type of repairs take special equipment and tools that most consumers dont have. Sorry i could'nt assit you more with this problem. Good Luck
I have similar problems with a Sony slv-d350p. I get an error reading and screen says "not reading the disc, try another disc". I was able to run a disc cleaner program just fine but no difference.

Preacher, have you tryed to clean the lens manually? If that doesnt work and you dont have an oscilliscope, then your going to have to take the unit into a shop that repair this type of equipment, because of like I said before you need specialized test equipment , tools, and training to adjust and alighn the servo circuits in a DVD or CD player/recorder. Sometimes the laser assy. its self is the problem, but, my experience in the warranty work we did, more then half of the lasers that were changed , didnt have to be and turned out to be alighnment problems. The biggest problem is that when the unit runs out of the Factory warranty, most of the time its not worth repairing these units as the cost has come down so rapidly. Try reading thid and see if this helps you any. http://www.techlore.com/article/10602/ Good Luck
Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have cleaned the lens, but I must point out that when the DVD does not work the disc will not turn, rewind or even eject. I even disconnected the DVD table internally and switch on the unit and still got the same error message. It is as if the unit totaly freezes. spark..................
