I recently picked up a Philips/Magnavox 52" Projection TV with a model number of 8p4831 C101
The problem I am having is that the image is very, very dim, hard to see and there are 3 bars that seem "deeper" in the image. On the left is a blue bar, middle is green, right is green. The same order that the CRT's or guns, or whatever, display onto the screen. The bar's are very large, they are about the same height as the screen, and look to be about 5 inches wide, maybe a little bigger.
I popped the back cover off and found a little panel that had 2 knobs for each of the guns. 1 knob says focus, other says screen. I tried adjusting all of them just a little bit, maybe 1/8 of a turn, with no luck. I also found a little box on the side, and it said convergence board on it. I tried adjust the knob on that box back and forth about 1/8 turn with no luck.
Am I better off bringing this TV back to the guy I bought it from, or is it an easy/cheap fix? I
Any help appreciated.
try doing a search on this site for magnavox 8*
OR a search for Philips 8* to see if you can turn up any info.
An incomplete Philips/Magnavox 805 chassis Manual 7573 (minus the training) is here:

You may be looking at crt coolant contamination problems, which MIGHT be cheap to fix but would require some time on your part. You can search Magnavox or Philips coolant on this site.
The tv should be free or very cheap.
I paid $200 for it.. The guy said I can bring it back since it isn't working.. but maybe if it's a cheap fix I will try it. Thanks for the info
So I decided to start messing with it.
On the panel that has the focus/screen knobs, I got the image focused in really well. It looks really nice. It is a little shaky however, just a tiny bit. I have no idea what causes that at this time. So I have some questions.
The knob that is located in a box on the Convergence Board. What does that do when I turn it clockwise/counter-clockwise? It didn't really affect anything on the image and I went ahead and turned it alot.
There there is a box on the "main Board, the same board the the RCA jacks and stuff are connected to, on the box it says Video Level, and has three knobs.
The knobs are labeled as followed;
VCO AFT DISC
L204 L202 L201
What happens, or what am I adjusting by touching these?
And I was also wondering what I am doing when I turn the "guns" in and out after loosening the wing nuts that keep them from turning. It seems to focus the image more but I dunno.

awesome.. awesome!!! So glad you posted, the tv is still sitting in my garage!
going to get on this task as soon as I can! if you're in the west minneapolis metro let me know so I can get you liquored up!
theres another thing that can mess with your convergence. you have to be carefull when you do the procedure for the coolant replacement. i have this same model tv that i got from my dad, and the screen was really dark. so i went to a tv shop and he was so busy he told me what i had to do. the coolant grows a fungus inside the color tube. so you have to pull them out and take them apart to clean them with rubbing alcohol. when you do this there are two magnets on each tube that if they get turned they will mess it up. thats what he warned me about. so i bought the coolant from him and did it myself. as i did it i hit the magnets on one of the tubes and now i can't get it set right. just wanted to warn you about that.
and if anyone knows how i can get that set right i would really apreciate the ensight.
