Sony KP-51WS510 Convergence Problem

After reading several other posts in this forum I have come to the conclusion that the IC Chips and/or resistors are bad.

I am going to attempt to repair the TV myself since I cannot afford to have a professional do it.

I am a computer repair guy and this will be the first time I am ever trying to repair a television.

I know how to solder and do other electronic stuff.

I have looked at the board and got the numbers off the IC chips, they are STK392-560.

What I need help with is if someone could email me a copy of the Service Manual for this model; KP-51WS510, also where can I purchase the parts I need online?

In addition, if it is not in the service manual, how do I discharge the tubes?  That is the only thing that has me frightend, the chance of getting shocked.

Any help is greatly appreciated, I am so disappointed with this TV, it is only 3 years old.  I have never had problems this soon with a Sony in the past and I have been buying Sonys for the past 26 years.

My email is: [email protected]

Thanks for your help,

Paul

Paul, You do not need to

Paul, You do not need to discharge the picture tubes as you will not be working in that circuit. I will send you a copy of the service manual but I really want you to read two great articles written by a Sony expert on the IC replacement and the alignment involved. The links are posted below. Good Luck with this repair.

Hi Larry,

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the info, it is helping.

I found another post where the guy said that it was easier to replace the entire board, but I went to the website he had listed and it was marked "No longer available".

Do you know of any other places that might sell the entire board?

Part# A-1302-708-A, got the number right off my board.

I found a place that has the IC chips for $30, but if I can get the whole board for just a little more it would be easier.

Sony really should have done a better job designing this thing without so much space for all that dust to get in there.  Has anyone ever covered the back holes up with a filter?  I am surprised I still had any picture at all with all the dust that was covering the projector lenses.

Thanks for your help.

Paul

That board if you can get it

That board if you can get it is a lot more then 30 bucks. Ptscorp will exchange or rebuild your board for about 175 bucks or so. You can go to their website and get the telephone number and ask them. TriState Electronics also rebuilds these boards for about the same price, and they are also on-line. never cover any vent holes with anything if you want it to last. Thats why a yearly cleaning is recommended.

I found the board at TriState

I found the board at TriState, $89.95 with exchange.  Might be more than $30 but it is a heck of a lot less than the $500 quote for repair from a local TV guy.  I know how to solder, but it has been 12 years since I have soldered anything.

I'm going to check those fuses first, before I order anything.

Would have been nice if Sony had advised that "Yearly Cleaning", I probably would not be in this boat now if I had been doing it yearly.

I am also going to call Sony to see if I can convince them into doing anything, it is ONLY 3 years old after all.

Do not replace the blown

Do not replace the blown fuses before you replace the convergence IC's or the board. I have seen people replace these fuse and that blows up something in the power supply. These fuses do not blow out for no reason. Also the cleaning has nothing what so ever to do with the convergence IC's going out. Good Luck with Sony. They will tell you that they did their part as when you bought the TV set you agreed on the 1 year warranty or you could have purchaced an extended warranty.

Pauly456
no, no, I just meant I wanted

no, no, I just meant I wanted to check them first so that I could order them if I needed them at the same time I order the other parts.

I know they would not be the main problem.

The dust on the heat sinks is not what caused the ICs to go?

Larry Dillon
Nope, it is something that

Nope, it is something that goes bad. I can't think of anything that last forever. No really,  you see these IC's are the hardest working parts in this set. If the projection TV set last long enough, I would bet that every single rear projection TV set will have bad convergence IC's eventually.

you cn also use a heat gun to

you cn also use a heat gun to help releae the compound

Just curious if you have replaced the board and if that fixed the issue.  I'm having a convergence issue and am not confident with my soldering skills either.  Do you mind sending me a link?  I can't find that part number on the tristate website.

Thanks

make sure you check the two

make sure you check the two pico fuses on th G board also. tht will make the convergence not work even after new IC's or a new board is installed.

Hi. I just got a Sony

Hi. I just got a Sony KP51WS510 Projection tv given to me from a friend and this is what the screens look like below. I have spending a considerable amount of time online reading all the blogs and info. that is out there and just wanted to get an experts advice on this. Please help! =) Thank you ahead of time.

I cant seem to get the picture to show up in this post. How do I do that?

Hi. I just recently was given

Hi. I just recently was given a Sony KP-51WS510 Projection TV and after doing some considerable amount of research on the web, I am almost convinced that I have a convergence problem. I have attempted to align the convergence with auto focus, manually, and even tried to do it in service mode after reading a post here on Techlore on how to do this. None have been successful. I was hoping to post some pictures on here like I've seen a few of you do but could not. Can anyone tell me how to do this so that you can confirm for me that this, in fact, convergence? Thank you ahead of time for all your help.

Hello! I am also experiencing

Hello! I am also experiencing convergence issues with my Sony KP-51WS510. Could someone email me the Service Manual for this model. I really would appreciate it. I have never done TV repairs; however, I feel confident just by reading the posts here that I may be able to successfully fix my Sony's convergence problem. I have soldered before in college, but nothing recent...is there a specific place where I can get the heatsink compound? Thanks in advance for any help.

Could someone send me the

Could someone send me the link for this tristate? I would like to do the same for my tv (same problem and same tv as above).
Also I don't have the remote but I am able to get to the convergence through the panel on the set but I don't know if I am even adjusting correctly or not. There are some white crosses and some blue and red side by side. When I move the blue crosses they move up down and side to side but the red will only move up and down so I am assuming the convergence is not working properly. Is this correct? Or am I adjusting wrong?
My email address is [email protected]
