What is it... do I need one? Are they being used at all anywhere?
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology is a newer form of Flat Panel display. While it is expected to become a contender against plasma and LCD displays, it is still a few years off before we see anything in larger sizes.
OLED technology has been in use for a number of years in smaller applications like in-dash stereo displays, camera displays, cell phone displays, etc. Normally, no bigger than a few inches.
OLED has potential, we'll just have to wait and see if it's ever realized.
E Ink flexible display profiled in NY Times article. E Ink is one of two patented digital paper techmolgies.
The other strong contender is Gyricon. Both technologies uses electric current to change the distribution or orientation of ink particles suspended in a thin film. The exicting potential is crisp clear display of text on cheap flexible sheets. You wouldn't see these technologies on your cell phone in 2005 but look for new gadgets with this ib the next 5 years.
Look for OLED displays to be used for your cell phones displays in the next 2 years. Early adopters of OLED based gadgets pay careful attention to the aging of the display. the current Achilles heel of OLED displays is the uneven aging of the colors in the display. One color may diminish significantly faster than others.
Look for Paypal via Mobile Phones
European mbile operators are offering a service called "Simpay"
http://www.simpay.com/ their tag line is "Pay for Stuff with your mobile"
Will your credit card be an alternative to your wallet ? Will your kids go into debit via the mobile ? Will Grandma, ever use it ?
Okay, I've got one (but it's not exactly right around the corner). What about quantum cell phones? How sweet would that be!? Totally secure, uninterruptable signal that can't get dropped, etc.
I just posted an article about said craziness, so if you're inclined toward the geekier side of life, check out more here.
