Mitsubishi WS-55807 cONVERGENCE pROBELM

I own a 4 year old Mitsubishi WS-55807 55" projection tv. Recently the top and bottom parts of the screen have a bow-like effect causing distortion on the top and bottom of the screen - yet the middle of the screen is ok. Resetting the convergence from the remote back to the orginal factory default setting does nothing. Some days it's fine and on others its unwatchable. I've heard that the solder joints can go bad as well as the 6"x8" heat sink.

All the local tv shops - (Bergen County, NJ) want $70 to $100.00 for an in-home service call just to take a look at it. With my luck, they will come and the problem won't be there.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Many shops will apply the

Many shops will apply the charge for the quote to the labor cost in some cases. Shop around until you reach an agreement with a shop that seems fair to you.

A good way to make sure they see the problem is to snap a digital photo of the TV when the issue is occuring. That way, you will have something to show the service man if the TV is behaving that day.

My WS-65819 just started

My WS-65819 just started doing the exact same thing. When we turn it on it looks barrel shaped for about a minute and then pops back to normal. I haven't called a tech yet as I was hoping to find some info on internet to figure it out before spending the money. I'll post if I get it fixed.

I am having the exact same

I am having the exact same problem as Freddie Dee with the same unit also about four years old. My problems seemed to begin shortly having Comcast Digital/conversion box installed...might be total coincidence. Any fixes yet?

The posts I have read isolate

The posts I have read isolate the problem as a bad convergence and suggest replacement of both ICs (392-570). That's all good and well, but the chips do not need to be replaced. I rarely see bad 392-570s. Simply touch the pins with fresh solder. Breaks also appear on the bottom of connectors VR and PM.

Short term Fix: Kick the bottom corner of the tv a couple times, if the breaks aren't that bad it should snap back into place. :)

If you are of the hardcore variety I can instruct you how to remove the chassis from this tv, resolder and replace.

ragingigas, As an electronic

ragingigas, As an electronic tech, I am really surprised at the kick method you tell people to do to as a tempoary fix for bad connections.  You as a tech should know intermittant circuits, specially high curent circuits like the convergence can lean to burning of the printed circuit board.  Oh yes, and as a tech on the beginnings of projection TV repair up to todays sets, I have replaced many bad STK 392-570, as yes resoldering the iC's might temporarly fix the set as it is sweating the connections inside the IC's as there is a mechanical connection problem inside the chip.  And I have also had shorted IC's of this number that killed the entire set till they were changed.

Resoldering these chips has

Resoldering these chips has been the only thing I have had to do in my set. That being said, it was a permanent fix to my problem, as well as many of my customer. If I don't have to use an IC, then I don't have to sell it to the customer. Now... there have a been a few rare instances when after resoldering them, I noticed that either the vertical or horizontal drive of the convergence still isnt adjustable. At this point you can confirm that you have a bad IC. I've had more success resoldering so I always try that first.

The kick remark was intended as humor. Alternately you can use it as a tool. If the convergence snaps back into place, it's a resolder job. If it doesn't, you have faulty ICs. Disclaimer: Don't kick your TV as a means of fixing it.

Of course another factor determining permanence is your skill with a soldering iron. The longer you take doing this job the more likely you are to fry the IC.

Just had another bad STK392

Just had another bad STK392-570 today!  Tryed to resolder no change, replaced IC, did a little touch up walked out the door with 150 bucks!

I purchased (2) STK392-570

I purchased (2) STK392-570 from bluestar international components ( www.bluestar-online.com ) for $8 each plus shipping. Of course they were complete crap and don't work..

DON'T BUY FROM THIS SITE; THEY OFFER NO WARRENTY OF ANY KIND. THE PRODUCT THEY SOLD ME IS SH*TE AND THEY PROBABLY KNOW IT.

If the IC's do not have Sanyo

If the IC's do not have Sanyo on them, they are the aftermarket types and are not worth the money.  Ic's that are 8 bucks are not good ones to use, as if you do get lucky, and get some that work, you will most likely be in the same boat a few months down the road. if you think about it, if they are selling the IC's for 8 bucks, what do you think they paid for them? Go HERE to see the original Sanyo IC's.  Good Luck with this repair , and let us know how you made out with this repair.

This is a bit off topic but the same WS-55807 model Mitsubishi Television.  My Mitsubishi is 7 years old and shut off while we were watching it last night.  Unplugging and plugging it back in doesn't work.  I checked all of the fuses and they are ok.  When I try turning it on I hear the relay click, the green LED comes on for just a second and then goes out.  Any clues where to start troubleshooting?

I have a mitsubishi ws-55807 55" and i've been having the convergence problem ever since 2003. I had order 2 "IC" and solder both onto the little board but the problem still there. Any suggestions or advice for me would be greatly appreciated. Or any photos of how and where to attact the problems is also greatly appreciated. Thanks.........

The screen on my WS-65807

The screen on my WS-65807 started bowing several weeks ago...what a bummer. I paid top dollar in 2000 because I heard Mits was such a good name(and I'm sure it still is). It would "converge" back to normal after 30-40 minutes. The technician visiting my home today was going to charge me $400 (parts and labor) to get the job done on site. He has repaired other Mits models for the same problem and replacing both ICs does the job. However, he said that if you do-it-yourself you need to be sure to procure the OEM ICs and not some off-brand. The OEM brand (Sanyo) is Mits-approved. Being in the electronics contract manufacturing industry, my solution right now is to procure the two Sanyo ICs and have my guys properly extract the ICs with direct heat, re-apply solder paste and reflow at the recommended temps. I will let you know how it turns out if anyone is interested. RAMO

I have a Mitsubishi WS-5507 w

I have a Mitsubishi WS-5507 w a V-17 Chassis had a convergence problem the red would not move up or down, tried to re-solder the IC connections and lost the picture all together, still have sound and all functions just a black screen. just purchased two new stk 392-570's. Do you think while soldering I could have blown a fuse for the IC's if so dose anyone have any idea where they are located I'm trying to fix it with out a schematic. Any help would be great..

Larry Dillon
You did unplug the set before

You did unplug the set before you re-soldered did you not?? Also check for solder shorts across the pins on the IC'S, If there are any shorts or solder bridges most likely you blew out the chips. The best advice I can tell you at this point, is to go to tvrepairkits.com and order the complete convergence kit for your model of TV set, no need to search and order multiple parts from different sources and pay multiple shipping fees! The kit comes with original Sanyo STK ICÂ’S , not those cheap aftermarket or china made ICÂ’S full pictorial directions, the thermal paste, resistors, the correct Pico fuses, AND free live on-Line tech assistance in case you run into a problem with the repair. They ship out 2 to 3 day Priority mail, the next day in most cases GOOD LUCK!!!

As Larry mentioned you might

As Larry mentioned you might have created a solder bridge(s) across the IC terminal leads (they are fine pitch) and the unit(s) might have shorted out.

I finally extracted my convergence board out last week and took it into my electronics shop. Removing the board assembly out of the chasis was a bit of a challenge (removed several screws, ribbon cables, a daughter board, and a large heat sink). I procured 2 Sanyo ICs and plan to have a professional technician de-solder the 2 ICs and replace with the new ones. Will know if it works in a few weeks.

Buying the entire kit is a good idea too (more expensive).

Thanks Larry & RAMO This is

Thanks Larry & RAMO This is the second time I'm replacing the IC's first time set me back 500.00 to an in-home tech, the TV's not worth that much any more I do alot of computer work so I just thought I would give it a try. I just picked up (2) Sanyo IC's from E=Bay I have the paste and solder. I was just looking at the board and can not find the Pico fuse for the IC's any idea where they are Im going to check to see if any solder jumped it's way to it's neighbor and try again. I'm kind of getting into this esp if I can fix the problem, I have a four year old that thinks I can fix anything so I have something to shoot for, Thanks guys...

Larry Dillon
RAMO but is it really more

RAMO but is it really more expensive. you do not have to pay individual shipping for the IC's. then the resistors. then the pico fuses and most places online or locally will of course say the IC's are the original sanyo IC's but they are not tyhe bestv way to tell is look at the printing on the IC's, they will have the letter T or another letter following the STK numbers, or the printing looks cheap and can be rubbed off with fingernail polish remover the problem with the aftermarket IC's is that MOST are factory rejects!!!also you need to go out and get the thermal paste for the backs of the new IC's to help with the heat transfer from the IC to the heat sink. just to test my theory I went out and purchased all the parts I needed and between the cost as a lot of places there is a minimum amount you can order in one order for original IC's and all the parts I needed for a Sony set. I paid close to 100 bucks, and if you want a service manual you pay another fee plus shipping and handling if you want a manual I will send you one PDF for free after the kit is purchased.plus if you run into a problem the site does NOT leave you hanging. they have live on-line tech assistance to help you. so you need to know all the facts before stating an untrue statement. I do not own any part of this site but they have helped me out several times with several issues. so when I see a good thing i will share my good experience with the folks that need the help
as I have here at this ste for no pay for several years.

Thanks all for your input. I'm going to purchase the chip and try to fix the problem with my TV. Does any one have the diagram where those chips are located
Thanks

RAMO
egeneration, the 2 Sanyo

egeneration, the 2 Sanyo chips are difficult to see from the rear access of the TV (mine is the WS-65807) because they are on the other side of a large 9x5x2 aluminum heat sink (it can only be seen from the front). You will need to remove the speaker screen and center cover (the lenses are right behind it). When reviewing from the front of the TV there is a flat metal bar that needs to be removed (3 screws) and then you need to unscrew the 2 mounting screws of the heat sink. It appears the ICs are attached to the heat sink, they are not. The white material is viscous heat dissipation compound that you'll need to re-apply once you replace the ICs and the heat sink. There are other items to remove such as the ribbon cables, board mounting screws, and it wouldn't hurt to remove the small vertical daughter card. I just picked up my repaired convergence board today and will be installing in the next day or so (keeping my fingers crossed). I bought the Sanyo ICs from www.newark.com (with shipping it was less than $50). I had a professional desolder the old ICs and replace the new ones. We'll see where it goes. Ramo

I hope they are the original

I hope they are the original s as the bogus aftermarket ones cannot take any heat before breaking down internally, just to remind people if you can rub off the silkscreen numbers and letters withe acetone/fingernail-polish remover they are probably aftermarket IC's or seconds or factory rejects)thr lettering is most the time very white in color

Larry!! I got my new IC's

Larry!! I got my new IC's yesterday and by 3:30 AM I got the re soldered in the mother board put everything back in and the picture I can tell is better but the convergence problem is still there. I'm going to pull it back apart today just to make sure i have no cross solder on the IC's but the problem is when i go into set up to set my convergence blue works both directions but the red only works from side to side it will not let me adjust it up and down, just picking your brain do you think it could be a fuse, if so have any idea where they are locater on a WS=55807 Thanks...
Dennis!!

Larry Dillon
did you try to align the set

did you try to align the set before you repaired it?? if you did you will need to readjust the convergence as per the service Manuel, if you did not you could have a scorched resistor bad resistor or maybe just need to touch up the alignment of the convergence???
Larry

Vette69
Well first off I have no

Well first off I have no service manual, second I did try to adjust the conv before I replaced the IC's I'm about to give up on this thing it almost is not woth the money I just saw a Mits on craigs list that was bigger then my 55 for 100 bucks...I'm thinking about it..

Larry Dillon
it may be in worse condition

it may be in worse condition then yours was in? if you had left an e-mail address I can send you a service manual. good luck, what area you in???
