Mitsubishi HD 1080 series convergence problem

I bought a nice mitsubishi HD TV in 2002 and it worked fine. the past year or so though it's convergence will change itself drasticly and give me a picture where i can basically see 3 of everything, red, blue, and green. To stop this I've just left it on all the time with a black screen becuse it would mess up after being turned on, but i'm afraid it's causing more damage. Now when I change my reciever that sudden flash of the picture seems to be enough to mess up the screen. It's so bad I must let the tv sit for up to half an hour and cool down before it will even let me change the convergence. My only understanding is that the red and blue tubes and misaligning themselves and still considering themselves to be at factory default, but I would like to know wether this is a problem I can fix or if I need to send it in for repair? This has bugged me for the last time and I want it fixed as soon as possible!Yell

Your problem is the typical

Your problem is the typical convergence problem that happens on almost if not every rear and front , tube type projection TV set.  You may only have bad connections on the two convergence IC's or they could be intermittant.  These IC's are black in color with white writing on them.  They satnd up and are mounted on a large metal plate called a heat sink.  They will have the letters STK on them and will have numbers following them.  If you are going to replace the IC's, make sure you do not get the inexpensive replacement IC's and also dont forget to use new heatsink compound on the back of the new IC's before installing them, as if you do, not follow these instructions, you will be in the same boat without a paddle in you know what creek in a few months down the road.   If you know how to solder and unsolder on small printed circuit boards then you should have no problems in repairing this beast.  If you have had no past TV repair experience, play it safe and call in a pro to assist you in this repair.  if this is bad connections, the longer you wait to have it repaired, the more of a chance that this WILL cause the chips to overheat and fail, that is if they have not already. Also while you are in there, you should take out the DM board and replace 4 capacitors with newer types that can take the heat a bit better as soon enough you will have the dreaded green light fault.  I have instructions for that .  Good Luck and let us know how you make out with this repair.

What is the DM board in the

What is the DM board in the upper conversation for fixing a Mitsubishi HD1080 projection T.V. I'm a board level technician for Audio equipment but I don't know that much about T.V. repair. I'm very good at soldering and repairing computer circuitry and building microcontroller boards. So if I can figure out what and where these parts are I can probably fix them. Thanks for the help above I'll see if I can find the STK chip and see if they have an intermittent pin or are getting hot

I have a WT-46805 tv that had the convergance problem. I found the solder connections were bad and then resoldered them. All is fine and working great now. I was a little skeptical working around the high voltage though. Does anyone know the proper way to discharge the high voltage to work safely on this tv? I have electronics and electrical experience but never worked inside the tv set before. I fixed it without getting zapped but would like to know the right way to do it in case I have to go back in to work on it again. Thanks.

There is no high voltage in

There is no high voltage in the area you need to work on.

I am pretty sure the guy who

I am pretty sure the guy who said just re-solder the IC was talking out of his ass. I downloaded the manuel and the conversion generator is all small mount so soldering a lead by hand is ridiculous. As well, good luck trying to order the replacement part, mitsubishi will only sell these parts to service centers who want to charge you $300 to put a replacement board in.... Fuck mitsubishi and fuck the dude who said

Larry Dillon
sflow, lets try and watch

sflow, lets try and watch what we say here please! It is called surface mounted parts and yes Mitsubishi does have a parts selling agreement with their authorized service's about selling parts to non Authorized people, but most parts are or or can be replaced with OEM parts and most complete printed circuit boards are not replaceable , but repairable. If one cannot repair their own boards you could always turn to a second party board re worker suck as ptscorp.com or Tristate module repair. And I have had many many Mitsubishi projection sets with intermittent convergence problems and simply Resoldered the IC connections and had the sets last way over a year. I am pretty sure you have read here that I have recommended many times to try and resolder the IC's first when the owners were complaining about the convergence being intermittent. Also I try my best not talk out of my rear end!

Randall Arndt
I have resoldered the

I have resoldered the convergence chips on my wt46805 and it solved the problem. I also purchased a wt46807 from someone local with the same issues. I was able to resolder this one as well. So now I have 2 46" tvs working just fine. Before I soldered the first one, I could actually see that there were cold solder connections on all of the pins to the chips. The second one was very hard to tell, but after about 10 minutes of looking and using a magnifying glass, I was able to see which pins were the problem. I've worked in electronics awhile soldering on boards for fiber optic amplifiers so the soldering wasn't all that difficult for me. The total time to fix was about a half hour. So I would try to repair before I go and buy a part.

GOOD FOR YOU!!! Great Advice

GOOD FOR YOU!!! Great Advice also, thanks for the great feedback! But I simply re solder all the pins on Both IC's without wasting TIME LOOKING for bad connections,

I have an Mitsubishi HD 1080

I have an Mitsubishi HD 1080 65 inch and my father set the v chip lock on it. Does anyone have a reset code? I've had it for years and i can't find my owners manual. Thanks in advance.

Larry Dillon
you will need the original

you will need the original remote to do this with!! A universal will not work to unlock it I'M afraid
Bypassing the V-Chip Lock on most Mitsubishi sets:
Mitsubishi sets use a four-digit passcode that is required to view a V-Chip locked program, view the locked TV, cancel the lock, or enter the V-Chip lock menus.
If you don't have the passcode, it is easy to bypass. This is neccessary if you forgot the code, purchased the set used, or if you simply don't feel like searching through your files to find it.

To bypass the V-chip: You can view the locked shows by pressing the number 9 and QV buttons on the remote at the same time, whenever your passcode is requested. This process temporarily unlocks the TV.

To reset the code: When you use the button combination 9 and QV while entering the V-Chip Lock menu, this process deletes your old passcode and prompts you to enter a new passcode.

There are tons of places to

There are tons of places to purchase the STK Convergence IC'S, BUT you have to be careful!!, Most CHIPS that a lot of sources sell are the cheap china made or aftermarket IC's The best advice I can give you as I purchase all my STK IC's from as they sell the complete kit of parts needed tvrepairkits.com, no need to dink around searching for the thermal paist, resistors, pico fuses. you can purchase the complete kit of parts needed for your TV set!!!
for your TV set in one spot!, also one charge for priority shipping not two to three different shipping charges,

Hey Larry,    Thanks for

Hey Larry,

Thanks for being a kind soul and helping so many people out!     Smile

I was wondering if you could clarify a couple things on solving a "nonblinking light" code 22 - short protect problem.

I have a WS-55859 that just went dead. No blinking, it just powers off after a second - you can hear the relays click. The DM box was replaced with a factory Mitsu rebuild 2 yrs ago. I opened it up and can see that the 7 caps were replaced with new Nichicon Capacitors. The DM mother and daughter boards look brand new inside, so I don't think it's the problem.

I've read pages of your posts, and from what I gather you believe that most of the code 22 problems are due to convergence IC failure and/or associated pico fuses. I read the page where you gave the specific instructions for testing and replacing the IC for my model WS-55859.

You said to slide the chassis back and tip it up to do the desolder/resolder on the underside center pcb. I'm just curious:
1) How can you do the soldering work with the board vertical or at in angle?
2) What about the high-voltgage wires on the right going to the guns. Do you just stretch them? You don't disconnect them do you?

Won't it be easier to slide the chassis back a little and remove the center pcb from the tray instead of disconnecting all the wires in front and dealing with the high voltage stuff?

Thanks Again!
Ron

My Mitsubishi 1080 Series HD

My Mitsubishi 1080 Series HD TV purchased in 2002 suddenly went to a black screen with red horizontal lines showing (the ones at the top and bottom are curved). No sound, nothing else. Tried resetting and nothing happened. Anyone know what this is? Any rough estimates on cost to repair vs purchasing a new flat screen?

yes tilt the board as if you use the desoldering bulb/iron this should be easy

Larry ... sorry, but this explanation is confusing to me.

 1)  Won't the solder run with the board verticle or at an angle?

2) What about the high-voltgage wires on the right going to the guns. Do you just stretch them to get the tray out? You don't disconnect them do you?

never had a problem with

never had a problem with solder running as you do not use that much, and the cables should stretch enough to tilt it up

Hey Larry, I just looked at

Hey Larry, I just looked at the convergence kit you recommended from tvrepairkits.com
---------------------------------------------------------------
Kit Includes

*Factory Original Sanyo brand Convergence Chips . Note: Sanyo was the primary manufacturer of convergence chips used in projection TV sets.
*Thermal Paste
*QTY 6 - Convergence Resistors
*Instruction Manual - Complete Instructions on how to repair your TV. This is a step by step photo instruction quide that will walk you through the convergence repair procedure. (Download Version - PDF format allows you to view/print from your computer)
*Desoldering/Soldering Tips (Instuctions on how to solder )
*Email/Phone/Live Chat Support
----------------------------------------------------------

It appears to include resistors and no pico fuses.

You haven't mentioned replacing the resistors.

Can you please comment?

Larry Dillon
what can I say???? it

what can I say???? it mentioned them where you looked and you yourself mentioned them, what else needs to be committed on?????

Larry, If I upset you in some way, I'm Sorry! I'm just looking for clarification on the details before I tear into this project!
---------------------------------------------------------
In your previous posts where you just started recommending them, you said it was a "COMPLETE KIT" and that it included the pico fuses.

I guess the "what else needs to be commented on" I had in mind was:

1) Your opinion about whether it was necessary to replace the resistors, since you never mentioned it before.

2) Do I need to order pico fuses seperately to make this kit "COMPLETE"?

Thanks Again for your and help and God Bless!

no Ron no no problem, did not

no Ron no no problem, did not mean to sound pissed off as I am not!! no do not order anything except the kit, the picos and resistors all come with the complete kit

I have a wt 46805 tv that I

I have a wt 46805 tv that I had fixed the convergence problem a few months ago. Now it seems as if the problem is back. I found the resistors R8E00 and R8E03 were burnt really bad. I ordered the repair kit from tvrepair and replaced the STK's. The resistors that came with the kit didn't match teh burnt ones so I got some from radio shack and replaced them with 120ohm half watt resistors. Put it all back together and the convergence is still bad and the resistors fried again. What could be the problem here or is the tv just finally at its end? I didn't mess with the pico fuses since I wasn't sure which ones were for the convergence chips.

Larry Dillon
if you ordered a kit from

if you ordered a kit from tvrepairkits.com please go to tvrepairkits.com/helpdesk and they can and will assist you. Most likely you have a pin or connection shorted with a solder bridge or did not use enough new heat sink paste

I have a hd1080 series and

I have a hd1080 series and just moved apparently the movers pulled the screen off without disconecting the jacks.i found the primary board(power on /vol) was broken off at the jack connection. Are replacment circuit boards aviliable or is there a way i can rewire it in order to let my cable box control power/vol/ch. Im sure i cant be the only guy out here with a bad moving co.
Ps.im good with electronics and can solder.
thank you
