Zenith (Model D60WLCD) 60" lcd tv has been great. However,
recently, a green blob (or spot or bloom) is in the background near the
bottom center of the screen and affects the colors of any overlying
video on the screen. When the sceen is on and displays a rather
grey background (without a video picture), the green blob is seen
clearly. Can still view video pictures fairly well, but the
green influence is bothersome. Does anyone know what the problem
is and what I can do about it?

This is a common problem with a micro-display projection TV set. Its because of dirt or something else is on the display screen and needs to be cleaned off. Most LCD projectors have shields and casing around the display and light box part of the set and should not be taken apart without a service manual to help you take out the proper seqence of screws. if and once you do get into the display, never spray anything directly onto the microdisplay and never use a paper produt to use to wipe it. You should always follow the directions to clean in the service manual. Let us know if you had to get a pro to assist you and how you made out and good luck.
Larry,
Thank you for answering my request.
I just got
off the phone with Belmont TV (Arlington, VA) where I puchase the tv in
May, 2003. They said that they've had this problem before, and
that it is a charred, burnt, or otherwise damaged "filter" that
needs replacement. According to them, the filter is for filtering
light through the optic engine. It would ll cost me around $500
dollars to have them pick up the tv, replace the filter, and return the
tv. When I questioned why the cost was that high, I was
told that they used to have to replace the whole optic engine (at a
cost of about $2500) and that I was fortunate that they now can replace
the filter only.
Does this make sense or sound reasonable to you or anyone else?
<>Should I purchace a service manual and check it out myself?
Thank you for any help/advise that can be provided.

I will tell you the truth that I thought they used the light engine in a plasma set only? The service manual is available from http://www.servicemanuals.net for $23.99 For that price I would think it would be worth for you to download it and make sure you can or cannot do it yourself. If you did not know if you cando it for yourself, send me the download to peek at and I maybe can assist you in repairing this set. Of course I wont be able to tell untill I see the service manual.
Larry,
I'll get back to you as soon as I get the service manual.
Thanks, Dadala
If it is a pdf, simply send as an attachment to my E-Mail addy. I will send it to you.
My tv has this same problem only its the blue LCD. I do work as a tech in a tv repair shop but generaly with light engine issues we just replace the whole optical drive assemblyl. Just for fun (since this tv was given to me because it wouldnt work, and because its too heavy to move as is by myself) I decided to tear into the thing. Sure enough the filter for the blue LCD panel is burnt up. Anyone know where to get a replacement filter? For now its going out into my garage in peices I guess.
BTW: The service manual will be of no help. Its board level repair only and they dont give you part numbers for the filters, just for the boards. I called their part supply company though and if they get back to me with a part number I will post.
