Hi. I've had this TV for the past 10yrs. and it has worked perfectly. After about 45 min. of watching it last night, I heard a "pop" and it shut down, and I could smell like a burning plastic smell.
I took the back off and can't see any obvious melting, but now when I power it on, 2 lights come at first, followed by a third which sort of "pulsates" then it shuts down.
Anyone have any idea what could be issue before I have to call someone in? Appreciate it. Thanks.
check for a shorted hv cap by flyback and check 135v supply fuse. there should be leds on the chassis.the hv one will not be lit.
Hi Senetor91,
Check out this forum for yout TV....
repair forum threadhttp://forum.eserviceinfo.com/viewtopic.php?t=22049&highlight=e994
I paste some of it here, my TV has the exact same symptoms.....
""
The symptoms are that when I plug it in, the Red LED turns on for a few seconds, then disappears. It won't power up at all, it's dead. C707 and e994 fuses are a good place to start. Convergence IC's are also a common failure. Tritronicsinc.com is a great place to look up parts. I replaced my c707 and it still doesn't work.
The e994 is in tact, isn't "popped" or anything like that. When I plug the TV in, I hear things start up, 5 out of the 6 green LED's that I can see turn on, but the green LED that is closest to the e994 protector doesn't turn on and then the other 5 green LED's turn off as the red "Protect" LED flashes on and off. Did you check E996? Check all your pico fuses and let me know. After looking more closely at the green LED's on the board, I see that they are all labeled on the board.
The one green LED that does not light up is labeled "+B 120V"
Does that give any insight into what's wrong? Is it D940?

D912 is a red led. Off no I901 B+. On I901 B+. Blinking shutdown.
Replace E994 anyways. I'm looking for a boards for you.
Minnie, you are an electronics genious!
I went ahead and replaced the e994 like you suggested. Plugged it in, the set now works!
Amazing how two little pieces can affect the entire operation of the set like that.
Thank you very much for your suggestions and patience with my questions, I really appreciate it!
So all in all, it was exactly as you thought, both the c707 and the e994. Replaced both of those parts (purchased at http://tritronicsinc.com/) for a total of $12.36 and now I have a working TV that my co-worker gave me because it stopped working! He used that as an excuse to get a new TV.
Thank you Minnie! IM me your email address so I can email you a little thank you gift.
By the way, for anyone else who has this problem, here's the part numbers I ordered:
C707 - Part 0244211 (was 0244211F) - Cap. Ceramic DE1210R102K - $1.83
E994 - Part AZ00104M - Protector (CRXT491002) - $2.58
Also, as a sidenote, I didn't have to completely take the board out of the TV, I just unscrewed the 2 screws that are holding the board in place and pulled the board slightly out of the cabinet while still connected to everything. I had to undo some of the wire restraints to allow me to pull the board out a little farther, but it was enough.
I then just clipped the pieces and left the metal leads sticking up and used those metal leads to solder the new pieces to.
If anyone else finds this thread and eventually fixes their TV due to the efforts of this thread, let me know! ""
I too, had the same symptoms on my Hitachi, and following the advice on this page, replaced the C707 and E994 for a little over $5.00 less postage, and the set works as good as new. I was facing a $400 to $500 repair, and that is, if I took this 55" "monster" to the repair shop!! Reading your advice, and garnering the courage to try this repair proved not only self satisfying, but financially satisfying as well. thanks so much for sharing your experience on this page!!!
I had the exact same problem with my Hitachi 50UX58B, took you advice and my tv is as good as now. Ordered from EnCompass and replaced C707 and E994. Thanks so so much.
I also replaced the C707 and E994 in my Hitachi 55UX58B and it fixed the problem. TV is working great. I purchased a 15w soldering iron, 60/40 solder, and de-soldering braid at RadioShack for $18.
There are soldering/de-soldering videos on UTube for you to learn how to solder.
You do have to replace both C707 and E994 for the repair to work. I tried just the C707 and no luck. Replaced E994 and it worked.
I didn't have to remove the circuit board from the TV. Just remove the two black screws holding the board to the TV cabinet and gently slide/pull the board towards you a couple of inches. This will free the board up so you can tilt it up. (There are posts mounted to the cabinet that
I have the same problem.
