How to Digitize 35 mm Slides?

I am looking for an effective and affordable means of digitizing 35 mm slides.  I have many hundreds of slides, both my own and my father's, going back over 50 years and some are starting to show color degradation and I would like to digitize them before they get much worse.

About 10 years ago I purchased a slide and negative scanner, but the results were unsatisfactory.  I have looked for alternatives today, and the only things that I have found seem to be similar technologies, some of them included with flat bed scanners, and some very expensive dedicated slide and negative scanners.

I am wondering if a digital camera, with an extreme close up capable lens, sometimes called macro, could be used to obtain good quality digitized copies of slides?  What other reasonable options are there?

Macro lenses won't cut it.

Macro lenses won't cut it. 10 years is a long time for technology and scanners were pretty bad then. I think you will find that they have improved a lot & would recommend you go with a dedieated 35mm scanner. They also usually come with software that will help correct for magenta casts, etc. It's definitely not an easy process.
The other option which is probably more expensive, but saves you time/effort/learning is to look for online scannning services. But, they do most of the work for you. Good luck!
