Phillips 60P8341 Rear Projection TV (chassis PTV915)

OK - this is a fun one...

I have a 60" Phillips TV that appears to have "died".

Some history:

The original problem began about 3 weeks ago.  When the TV was powered on, as the set warmed up the screen would turn red - with wavey lines across it in a slightly lighter red.  Then it would get to the point that the whole screen would be fairly bright red, and you would hear a click, and the red would turn off.  Then it would repeast.

About a week later, doing the same thing, I noticed that when the red gun apparently turned off, there was a blue background - almost like the blue gun was on, but nothing else.

Yesterday, I finally had time to take a look at the set, and downloadd the service manual.  I turned the set on and verified it was still the same problem.  I went in the other room to get a camera to take a picture of the screen to post here (or a WMV file showing the pattern), but when I returned to the set a few minutes later, I had no picture at all.  Unplugged the set for about an hour to see if it was heat related, then turned the set back on, still with no picture.

In the service manual, it indicated how to read the codes using the led on the power switch.  Put the set in Service Default Mode (SDM), and read out codes 7 and 3.  According to the manual, error code 7 equates to "BC loop not stabilized", and code 3 is "X-Ray protection" - a warning when the set malfunctions.  (I think BC stands for Black Current?)

Now when I turn on the set, the power button LED lights for about 10 seconds, then goes out, as if it has turned the set off.  I hear a faint chirp-type noise all the time when the set is plugged in (turned on or off), but nothing else.  And I can not get it to stay on long enough to read additional codes even with the "blinking LED procedure".  I've not taken the back off the TV yet to see if anything obvious has fried...

Any ideas?  I am wondering if I have two problems now - the original one that caused the screen to look screwey, and now a second one that prevents it from even coming on?

Does it sound like the set being turned off is done by protective circuitry, or like the power supply is now out as well?  Please help...

The chirping sound is an

The chirping sound is an overloaded switching power supply. Likely the flyback transformer went bad causing excessive focus-G2 voltage and shortly thereafter took its driver circuit with it shorting the 130v supply to ground. The flyback transformer on this chassis has all its driver circuitry built in so when you replace the flyback (called a high voltage generator on this tv) you are also replacing the output transistor and all associated components. If you replace the high voltage generator it should run. Know that if the G2 (screen) voltage is not properly adjusted the automatic kine bias circuit will mute the video.

Good luck

I just got a 60 inch ptv915,

I just got a 60 inch ptv915, model # 60P8341A from a neighbor.... It doesnt turn on all the time. The power light comes on for a sec, then flashes. When it does come on, the speakers are real static-y. Any idea how to fix this, and about how much it will cost?

I bought one in the summer of

I bought one in the summer of 2002. It has been a great TV! I had a problem with it shutting itself off and then having to wait to get it to turn back on. It progressively got worse. I am not a TV repair tech by any stretch. I found a message board similar to this one and a TV repair guy told me it was the SSB board. He gave me a link to this MCM company, I think that is correct. I ordered the board, installed it myself, too easy! It has been a couple years now and it still works like a champ! From all the research I did it appears this SSB board is a problem, but everyone told me it was worth fixing and has been. It was a little expensive, $300 or so, but I have gotten 2+ years out of the tv because of it and it was easy to do myself. Hoep this is helpful for someone. I am now having a minor issue that seems to have started in the last few months. No big deal msot of the time, but the bottom inch or so is cut off like the picture needs to be aimed up more on the screen. Looking for a service manual to tell me how to adjust it.
