I received a Philips 60" rear projection model 60PP9202 chassis number
DPTV305F from a friend who got it for free and attempted his own repairs.
Initially it had warped colors, AKA convergence problems. He replaced 2 resistors
with incorrect valued ones then gave up as he didn't want to pursue this TV any
longer.
I first off replaced both resistors with 6.8 ohm 1 watt and both STK392-120's,
based on what he told me of the initial problems this seemed the likely repair.
As I first turned it back on, it would power up and then shut off 12 seconds
later, power back up on its own and repeat. I finially figured out that he had 2
cables plugged into the wrong connectors on the Large Signal board.
Currently the picture is perfect, but black and white. Any menu, convergence
screen and the PiP are vivid color, yet the main picture is shown in black and
white. All 3 color tubes have good intensity, covering each one produces the
color shade expected on the screen. For some reason the main tuner is only
producing black and white images. One other symptom is the PiP will only show
the channel that is one the main screen, even though the channel numbers
change.
I have searched in vane for any schematic or service info beyond the STK's
and resistors. My suspicions are a defective IC that controls the main tuner or
possibly the loss of Chroma data supplied to this circuit.
So my questions are...
1) Is there as service menu I can access to determine the chroma data loss?
Or perhaps a factory default reset other than the one in the convergence menu.
2) Any clue where to start troubleshooting for the main tuner color circuit?
FYI, my background is 25 years of aviation, test equipment and consumer
audio electronics.
I am very proficient in component repair and have a basic understanding of
TV theory, but with out a good schematic, I may as well be a novice.
Any help is welcome.
UPDATE!!
This thread is only hours old, yet a lil knowledge is a dangerous thing.
After surfing thru TechLores site, I found your download section with what appears to be a generic service manual for all Philips TV's of this type. The 1st picture I see is of a chassis that is nearly identical to mine.
I have a lot of reading to do, thanks already this will get me started troubleshooting!

look in (green tab above) Resources>Technicians Corner>View All Downloads for the
DPTV305 manual. Which input(s) are you using?
Sorry, some how I completely missed the service manual for the chassis, I have it now.
But to answer your question, I have a DVD playing on AV2 and on AV3 and an air antenna with local channels.
I have figured out that the cable 0272 from the PiP board was plugged into connector 1028, its the 3 terminal white connector right below the antenna input.
i have noticed the number 2 pin on the cable goes to ground so i am betting that was what caused the off/off/on trouble.
Downloading the service manual now, boy do I have alot of reading to do now.
OK, after really digesting this manual I have found this.
In SDM (Service Mode) virtually all presets and options were OK.
It listed the following error codes
6 31 13 30 17 16 0
I cleared the codes and immediately error code 16 came back,
16 PIP/DW Tuner (ETA50) I2C failure.
Now, I can assume a part has failed on the PIP board now, but can I remove the PIP board completely and expect the TV to function normally except for PIP functions?
Thank for any advice.
given the previous owner repair attempts, I would double check all connectors against the interconnect wiring diagram (p114). Also, these sets are notorious for bad solder joints on ic's and CONNECTORS.
Hello,
Was wondering where you found the service manual? Would like to download one myself..
Thanks
T
I'd love to have this manual as well. Where can we get it?
Mine won't come on, so I am getting out the tools.
The IC convergence chips don't have anything to do with it not coming on, I don't think. Or do they?
Thanks for any assistance, in advance.
Well I am still watching B&W.
I have the schematic, but alas no real good guess as to whats wrong.
Error code 16 PIP/DW Tuner (ETA50) I2C failure.
While I still suspect you have a misplaced connector somewhere between the tuner and the crt's, there is one on the left near the back of the board that is hard to see, and sometimes wires can get trapped under the back of the board, possibly bad solder on connectors or bad stk's.
