JVC camcorder, display and viewfinder are blank!

I recently bought a JVC GR-DF450U and have hardly used it.  The other day when I turned it on, the LCD screen and viewfinder were both blank.  The cap is off and there are no errors on the screen.  All of the functions work but I can't see anything on the fold out LCD or the viewfinder.  Any suggestions??

I have just purchased a JVC

I have just purchased a JVC GZ-MG505 camcorder (not long introduced into UK).Worked fine for a few weeks, now I find that the LCD suddenly goes blank, about 10 - 20 seconds into recording; the Power/Charge red light begins blinking and despite switching off the power keeps on blinking. I have to remove battery to get the light to go out. Recharged battery and tried again, same happens all over again. Any help advice would be gratefully appreciated.

BigPoppaPDX, If there is

BigPoppaPDX, If there is nothing on the screen even on playbeck then I would say there is a power issue with the camera and should be sent in for a warrantey repair. If it does work with playback then look for the iris or shutter settings and make sure they are not on manual and set to automatic. Now with PEEKREN, It sounds like your not charging the battery enough, the battery charger is not working correctly or the battery is defective. if it was purchaced recently, go back to where you bought the unit and check it with one of their batterys. If may need serviceing also if theirs does the same thing. Both of yoiu please let us know how you solved your problems when you can. Good Luck

This is a pretty common

This is a pretty common problem with these JVC Camcorders. The iris is most likely sticking. Turn on the camcorder and tap the lens a bit, but not to hard to bend the lens and see if the iris becomes unstuck. Good luck

Then the iris is really stuck

Then the iris is really stuck. Not a lot you can really do man. Also, problem is, it also probably is not worth having repaired as a new iris or lens assy will cost about 250 to 300 bucks as there is a lo of labor involved. Sorry for the bad news. By all means, you should take it to an authorized JVC repair shop ASAP.

Can I take it apart and try

Can I take it apart and try to get it unstuck or repair it myself?

Larry Dillon
Of course you can but it is

Of course you can but it is no easy task my friend. It is a very involved mission to take one of these apart. You have to know when to fold em, know when to hold em. Oops wrong thread, LOL You do not have much leeway with the thin cables and plugs. You need to know where the places are to pry apart and to get the thing apart. Then you will have to take a part the lens. I do not recommend you do this.

Sorry about the late entry, I

Sorry about the late entry, I've been away.

The problem described here is relatively common and can be repaired. Usually if hte shop has any experience with these cameras, the cost will just be the labor. No parts are required for this repair. Basically what happens is that a small amount of lubricant has gotten onto the iris parts. Since these are usually controlled by very small motors and springs, it doesn't take much resistance to keep them from moving. The "repair" consists of dis-assembling the optical section to expose the iris and cleaning the iris parts themselves. Once cleaned, the section is re-assembled.

As Larry points out, this is not a repair for the novice. Camcorders are difficult even to the expereinced tech. On the good side though, usually once this procedure has been completed, you should never have the problem again.

I had the same problem with

I had the same problem with my jvc camcorder , which I bought long ago , and I hardly used it , the LCD and the viewfinder were blank or black , so I kept it aside , recently what I did , I switched the camcorder on and brought a torch and placed the camera close to the torch for five minutes , slowly slowly the LCD started to show the view , its working ok now

I have a JVC GR-D390EK which

I have a JVC GR-D390EK which I haven't used for some time. Have just gone to show my mum all the functions and the LCD screen isn't working when it's in the open position, however I've discovered that if I rotate the screen around totally the picture appears, but obviously this is of no use to man or beast! Any suggestions how to get this fixed would be gratefully appreciated. My parents are off on holiday in two weeks time and really wanted a video camera as they are going on safari.
