Denon AVR 2802 - Surround modes

For some reason I can't get sound on surround modes (5CH stereo, Rock Arena, Jazz Club, Matrix, etc.) from DENON AVR-2802.
From 'SELECT' knob on main unit i can get sound only from modes: DIRECT, STEREO, DOLBY PROLOGIC II, DTS NEO:6. On all other modes I have no sound from ANALOG or DIGITAL input (5CH Stereo, Rock Arena, Jazz Club, etc.)If I use DIGITAL input (optical) on this modes, DIGITAL sign is flushing on Display. I've checked manual instruction - Surround modes and troubleshooting,
there's nothing about it. I need some help over here.

First, what source are you

First, what source are you trying to play, and how is it connected to the receiver?

I've tried CD Player from

I've tried CD Player from ANALOG output, connected to receiver by analog cable(L,R jacks) to analog input(L,R)
I've also tried that CD Player using fiberoptic cable through DIGITAL input (OPTICAL). I've selected "OPTICAL 1" in System Setup Menu (Didital In Assignment). In both connections, other Modes like: DIRECT, STEREO,DTS NEO:6 were working fine.
I've also tried TAPE DECK using analog cable.
The same thing; STEREO, DIRECT,etc. works fine but no sound in surround modes - 5/6 CH Stereo,
Rock Arena, Jazz Club,etc.

Unfortuanely, the Denon USA

Unfortuanely, the Denon USA site has been overhauled, and now you can't download anything from their site. It's broken.

I've tried to emulate your problem with an AVR-5803, but that receiver doesn't use the select wheel. It has direct access to all modes.

To claifry, you can get the modes to appear, right? You just don't get any sound when a DSP mode is engaged?

Have you made sure that Speakers B is off, and set the input mode to AUTO?

robbiehob
Exactly, I can get modes to

Exactly, I can get modes to apper, but, there is no sound, maybe it just doesn't want to engage.
And AVR 2802 has also direct access to all modes from remote control, but it doesn't matter how I will change the modes, they just don't have the sound. I've made sure that Speakers B are OFF, and I've set the input mode to AUTO. I've tried everything.

Your unit has a bad DSP

Your unit has a bad DSP module.  No longer available new from Denon.

Thank you kickinbird for your

Thank you kickinbird for your input. Can you please explain what a DSP is or are you saying the display board is bad?  Some peeps do not understand the repair or service lingo.  Thanks

Larry, DSP is digital signal

Larry, DSP is digital signal processing.  There were a number of units that had bad modules.  Some had defective memory chips that would cause all kinds of odd symptoms.  I think there were design problems as well.

Thank you Dan.  A differant

Thank you Dan.  A differant name for a digital input.

Actually, DSP is not an input

Actually, DSP is not an input.  The DSP board is the one that decodes the various surround modes from a L+R signal into the surround channels.  On some machines, a failure of the DSP module would cause the entire unit to fail as the "bypass" would not necessarily work.  Any receiver that has simulated surround would contain DSP in some form as well.

Dan, you are right on the

Dan, you are right on the money.  I have a 2802 with a bad DSP board and have recently obtained another 2802 for parts.  I will soon transplant its DSP into my unit and see what happens.

I  have contacted (2) authorized Denon repair shops and cannot purchase a new replacement DSP board from Denon.  It appears Denon does a lousy support job.

Don't blame Denon for this

Don't blame Denon for this one.  As an authorized servicer for Denon, I couldn't get a board either without special dispensation from the Pope!!  Quite often there is only a single chip that has a problem and usually we were required to change the chip.  This is not an easy task.  Keep us posted on the progress.
