DVD - no picture, no sound

I just switched out a VCR for a DVD player and can't get picture or sound. I am using coaxial cables (it's an older TV). The TV is working fine and the DVD seems to be playing (the numbers are moving), but just not on screen...I've tried the TV input switch, and tried rebooting, but to no avail... Help please! Thank you!

How was the VCR connected

How was the VCR connected before you toke it off and connected the DVD player? Does your DVD an RF or coaxial output,  or just video(red, white and yellow jacks)?  If the DVD only has the video outputs, you will need to get what is called an RF modulator from Radio Shack or Wal-Mart. You take the red, white and yellow outputs from DVD player, connect up the cables that should have came with it. On the other side of those cables that you have connected to the DVD player, connect those plugs up to the red, white, and yellow jacks on the new RF modulator you purchaced. Now there will be a connector or a small cable that will connect up to the coaxial connector on your TV set. Now turn on the TV set onto the channel that you set on the RF modulator, there should be a selctor switch for two different channels and some may tune the UHF band. Read the hook-up direction on the RF modulator. Let us know how you made out with this hook-up. Good Luck

Hi Larry,

Hi Larry,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The DVD has coaxial as well as video outputs, but I was only using the coaxial because that's all my TV has to connect to (it's from the stone age, but I can't afford a new one yet...). Shouldn't it work with just the coaxial in and out?

Also, I am using satellite (Direct TV) so there are 2 coaxial "in"s to the satellite box and one out...I don't know if that would affect the DVD though - our VCR was hooked up the same way and worked fine.
Thanks again for any help you can give me...

If you are running the output

If you are running the output from the DVD/VCR into the satellite receiver, I'd guess that is the problem.  The DVD output is set such that it can not be recorded.  This may be screwing up the satellite box pass thru function.  Try connecting the RF output from the DVD directly to the TV.  If that works, you will have to purchase an RF switch to switch between the sat receiver and the DVD.

Dan means a simple coaxial A

Dan means a simple coaxial A - B switch to switch between the two RF (coaxial outputs. You may have messed up the input and the output up on the DVD. On DVD recorder/player , make sure the OUTPUT from the Direct TV receiver goes to the INPUT of the DVD recorder/player, and the OUTPUT of the DVD recorder/player to the TV coaxial fitting. If this does not work, what is the make and the model number of the DVD unit?

On nearly all DVD/VCR combos

On nearly all DVD/VCR combos (this is model dependent, but the majority), the DVD sound and picture will not be output through the coaxial connection, which is exclusively for VCR functions only. The yellow, red, and white cables can be used by either VCR or DVD, while S-video, component video, and HDMI connections will typically be exclusive to DVD.

If coaxial is your only choice on the TV, you'll need to run the line level connections (yellow, red, white) to an external RF modulator.

Thank you all for your

Thank you all for your responses and help...

The DVD player is not a combo, but do you think the RF converter is the answer anyway?
It's a SHARP Model DV-SR45U, if that helps...

The set up I've been using is basically 2 RF cables from outside into the satellite box, then 1 out from there in to the DVD, then out from the DVD in to the TV...(all coaxial/RF cables).

Thank you all again - I think this forum is great.

Hi again...I've been looking

Hi again...I've been looking into RF modulators, but they don't seem to have any different connections than the DVD player already has...is there something wrong with my DVD player? Or am I still doing something wrong?

Thanks...

It is a DVD recorder. In the

It is a DVD recorder. In the menu set up, is there a feature for output such as video or for the RF. What channel did you watch your old video recorder on the TV set when you had it hooked up?

Because it was said the DVD

Because it was said the DVD player has a coaxial output, I assumed it was a combo. It is in fact a DVD recorder, which will often have RF inputs and outputs for the cable tuner. However, that doesn't mean it will output the DVD audio and video via RF (which it won't). On page 8 in your manual, you'll see at the bottom that states there is no built-in RF modulator. That non-specifically means you can't use that as the DVD player output. So the RF output on the back of the player is really a pass through for your antenna or cable line.

If you need/really want to connect your DVD player to the TV via a coax cable, you'll need to get an external RF modulator. I know the plugs are the same, but it does stuff that's not built into the DVD recorder. Once you have one, it will hook into your system in roughly the same way as your VCR did.

If your TV has yellow, red, and white plugs then you don't need a modulator. Plus, you'll get a better picture if you hook up with better quality connections, like composite, S-video, component video, or HDMI.
