Enhached Tivo

The device I want is a Tivo with build in ethernet ports and
a firewire 800 port. It would have a near line storage capability so I could plugin 400Gb or 1/2 terabyte drive. I'm willing to
wait a minute or 2 while fetching programs from near line storage. This way I can watch those 6 24 episodes back to back without worring about my wife's food network show or Antiques roadshow.

Along the Enhanced Tivo line-

Along the Enhanced Tivo line-
I also wish there was an accessory to Series 2 Tivo that allowed me to use a cable card as cable box replacement. I am currently forced to use a cable box to get the interesting channels and need to run an IR translation/repeated cable so tivo can change the channels.

And I don't even think you'd

And I don't even think you'd have to "wait a minute or 2 while fetching programs from near line storage". There are plenty of ways to make that way fast!

But I doubt we'll get to this point without overcoming some MAJOR legal challenges from the record companies (as much as I would love to see your vision realized).

As soon as the final 2-way

As soon as the final 2-way CableCARD standard is finalized, you should start to see third party compatible devices spring up. Until then, we're stuck with proprietary cable boxes.

One of my favorite features

One of my favorite features about TiVo is the ability to make scheduling requests remotely using tivo.com. I think this could be improved by having full control over your TiVo's schedule remotely - primarily the SeasonPass priority list and Wishlist.

As the NCAA College

As the NCAA College Basketball Tournament is coming up, I'd like to see TiVo be more sophisticated around it's programming information; I'd like to select one season pass for all of the college games, from first round to championship, and not have to track them all down by awkward title or keyword searches.

Ugh... speaking of increasing

Ugh... speaking of increasing TiVo's scheduling intelligence, they have to do something more creative - come up with a better model - for "first run" shows that show more than once in their first week.

A few of examples (I'm letting you peer into my family's viewing habits here):

  • Nashville Star. The USA Network shows each new episode Nashville Star twice on Tuesdays and once again on Wednesday. Even though I have my Season Pass set to 'First Run Only', TiVo usually records two or all three of these showings. I don't want all three; it shouldn't do this. But, to allow for more flexible scheduling, I'd like to choose which of these 'First Runs' to record. Which leads me to my second example...

  • Deadwood vs. Desperate Housewives (or, me vs. my fiance). HBO is actually kind enough to show each week's episode of Deadwood at least 3 times each week, the first being Sunday nights at 8:00 PM (Central), then again at midnight, then again at 9:00 PM the next night. Desperate Housewives is also on at 8:00 PM Central on Sunday nights, but no other times during the week. Since I have Deadwood set on a higher priority than Desperate Housewives (it is my TiVo, afterall), TiVo just blindly records Deadwood instead of Desperate Housewives without giving me the flexibility of compromise to record the midnight showing.

  • The Apprentice on CNBC. NBC started showing its primetime hits like The Apprentice soon after their original showings on other nights on CNBC. I can wait for the CNBC showing of The Apprentice, if it means that I can watch other shows in the highly contested Thursday night slots.

So why don't I just set the TiVo to record the the showings I want using time & channel instead of using the Season Pass? Because it's a hack that defeats the purpose of having the Season Pass in the first place - now I have to figure out what is showing when and manage the changes when the schedule changes.

This needs to improve in the next generation of TiVo.
