DVI to HDMI w/ JVC 52" HD-ILA

I have a JVC HD-ILA 52" TV with an HDMI input and a SONY laptop plus docking station with a DVI output. When i attempt to hook up my laptop to the TV the picture is too large for the TV and I cannot adjust the resolution on the computer. It locks up. While the picture is clearer and brighter its somewhat distorted and programs that require a different resolution will not run. Am i ahead of my time thinking I could run all my programs through my TV using the HDMI input?

I need to check some of the specs on your TV before I can give you an educated answer. Do you know the exact model number of your TV?

turnbuk,

Don't let HDMI or DVI confuse you, just because it's a common connector on PC gear does not mean you can always pipe PC resolutions into any display that uses it.

The HDMI input on your television is not PC compatible. Therefore, it only accepts resolutions that conform to the ATSC television standard. You can adjust your laptop's output to one of these resolutions. I talk about this in detail here.

Programs that use DirectX often change resolution on the fly, and will therefore be troublesome when connecting to a TV that is not compatible with common PC resolutions. A device like the Hi-Wire may be a better way to connect your laptop to your TV. It accepts common PC resolutions and transforms them component video signals compatible with your TV. This will help with programs that require common PC resolutions.
