I recently got a 4 gig mp3 player. I accidently deleted the driver so I had to format it. Now it works fine but only has a 960 mb capacity. Can anyone tell me how to get my 3+ gigs back? I've formatted in windows, dos and with the sofware given to me with the player and still only shows a 960mb capacity. If anyone can tell me how to clear this thing out good and get all my space back i'd be thankfull.

Patrick..
What settings did you use when you reformatted your player? Do you remember the file system options you selected?
I just right clicked the drive on windows explorer.. I used fat...one time and tried fat 32 another. when I first did it. it split into 2 drives and all the space was on an f drive.. then I formatted again then the F drive disapeared and just left me with an e drive with 960mbs on it. I don't know about any settings.. it says capacity 960mbs..it has a drop bar but won't let me change..same with the e: drive... and it has either fat or fat 32 I tried both. I'm at a loss on how to get this space back..
thanks alot for replying

Hmmm... FAT32 definitely won't do the trick, but FAT (also known as FAT-16) should work. What did you select as the allocation size?
Also, what kind of player is it?
defaul allocation size is all it allows me to use.. I see there's a drop bar there but when I click it. it only allows me too use default allocation size. unless there's some way to change it that I don't know about..is there a way to change the allocation size? I formatted it every witch way and still only get 960mbs. I did it with fat and fat 32 with the same result. There is no brand of the mp3 player. Nowhere on the player or box does it say any kind of brand. It's a generic ipod nano..It looks just like one.. I'll include a link with a pic of it here so you can see it... If you want to e-mail me direct. it's [email protected]
thanks so much for helping me
Patrick.

Apparently you're not the only one that has problems with this kind of player. I did some hunting and found a post on the CNET forums that may be relevant to your problem. Suffice to say, things aren't looking positive for you.
Check out this thread and let me know if any of it helps you. In the meantime, I'll keep looking:

yea Ive done the exact thing it says to do in that article a bunch of times and it still leaves me with 960mbs....
what a pain huh? lol..well thanks lot for hanging in there and helping me;...

Sorry my friend. I wish I had more ideas for you, but I'm at the point where I'd probably need to have the device in my hands to figure anything else out. Any chance you can get a refund on your purchase?
I may be able to take it back to get it fixed. I have an odd idea I wanted to run by you. I ordered another for a gift before this happened and didn't open it yet. so this one still has the original firmware and drivers on it. if I copied this to my player would it help?
Probably would only make a difference if the software bundled with the player comes with a tool to properly format/factory restore it. If not, then I don't think it will matter. The filesystem is hosed and without intervention from the manufacturer, I'm not sure there's any way to fix it.
Regardless, I'd advise your gift recipient to avoid formatting it. ;-)
it came with a disk... but the disk only works with 98. I wonder if I hooked it up too a system running on win 98 if I could do it..
