Toshiba 40H80 - No Picture

A few days ago I was watching the TV when the picture began to zig zag.  I turned the TV off then back on and got no picture.  The set is about 5 years old (just out of the extended warranty).  Any suggestions on troubleshooting would be appreciated.

You have to replace or repair

You have to replace or repair the hyper module, or whats also known as the scan converter. There are about 10 to 12 surface mounted capacitors that have to be replaced. If you have little soldering skills, this is not the job for you to attempt. Have the set looked at by a pro. Good Luck

Thanks.  Which of the many

Thanks.  Which of the many boards back there is the infamous hyper board?

The Hyper board is the one

The Hyper board is the one standing up right behind the input board in the back of the TV set. It looks like a metal cage. It is directly behind the input board. But you do have to be very very very careful on removing this board.  There are metal tabs that are under the board, twisted, holding the board assembly in place. I have seen these sets where peeps have tried to get this board out and trash the set. The printed circuit board that the hyper board is solder ed to is very easy to crack. If you crack the main board, it is time to go shopping. Not a good project for a novice I'm afraid.

I have the same problem with

I have the same problem with my 40H80! No picture but sound OK. A repair tech checked it and said the hyper board needs replacement, but a tech in another forum diagnosed it down to the signal board to be replaced. The CRT's are all OK, and so is the High Voltage. The second tech said if I don't even get the on screen menu display, it is not the hyper board, since the on screen menu is inserted in the signal chain well after the Hyper board. Makes sense to me. So what part should one replace in a case like this?
Seems to me there are several reports of Toshiba rear projection TV's having similar problems, and they don't do anything about correcting it, or replacing the item, or even just not having their customers go through the hassle of figuring out what's wrong, when it is a known, recurring problem with the product! Not a good way to build a satisfied customer base!

For what its worth. I had zig-zag issue. (57hdx82). I attempted replacing the caps on the hyperboard myself. Plug hyper back in. NO picture or sound, No menu or OSD, nothing. Red light on in front stays on steady. After much troubleshooting nothing. Finally took hyperboard out and tried the set with it out. Got a light blue screen. Found a used tv on craigs list. Had the same hyperboard in it as mine. Took that hyper out and put it in mine. Everything works again. Picture a little dark but no more zig-zag. That hyperboard must effect a lot of different things.

yes it does! try looking over

yes it does! try looking over the HYPER for bad solder connections as a lot of times those small caps get installed in backwards accidental.

I recently had my HYPER

I recently had my HYPER rebuilt on my 42H82 due to wavy line symptoms. Reinstalled everything and plugged it in. Now I have sound but no picture. The picture is as if the TV was off and the menus do NOT show up. The power indicator is a solid red state when powered on....
