Sony KP-65WV600 Convergence Problem

I've read many techlore threads of Sonys having the convergence ICs go bad.  Congratulations on a very informative site.

A friend of mine gave me his KP-65WV600, and after reading these threads, I replaced the two Sanyo STK392-560 convergence ICs.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.  The blue settings can't be adjusted at all, and the red and green are still not adjusted right.

My friend did mess with the convergence beforehand, but I changed everything back to the defaults in the manual before trying manual convergence.

I also checked the pico fuses on the convergence board and on the power supply, and they all seemed to check out OK, and have tested the power supply voltages for +/- 19V (as stated in the service manual), and they measure a little over 19v, and other voltages seem to be in range (7 Unreg / 11 Unreg).

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

No one seems to be commenting

No one seems to be commenting on my post.  I did some more sleuthing, and it does look like voltages on the convergence board seem within range.

On the test points I measured, I got this:

+15  15.8

-15  -16.1

+19  19.4

-19  -19.7

I did notice that when I turned it on tonight to test the voltages that the heat sink for IC8001 is hot, but the heat sink for IC8002 is cool, not even warm at all.

Does this mean that I've fried IC8002?

I can't find any pico fuses that are opened up, but haven't pulled the board entirely out to pull every resistor to check it's value yet.

Help?   :)

Oh, also I have the service

Oh, also I have the service manual for the TV in .pdf form if that'd help figure out what's going on.

The problem was the resistor

The problem was the resistor on the mute circuit (R8038), it was a 100 Ohm surface mount (chip) resistor, somehow had been removed, either before me, or carelessly by me while replacing the IC8002.

Now I just have to figure out how to do the service menu convergence.

Putting it back to defaults in the service manual is still pretty off...

Time to learn a new skill.

Thanks for the other helpful posts in this and other convergence threads.

Hi Ryan, New here with a similar Sony 65" with the same convergence problem. Would be mightily interested in your progress and results. Feel free to post or contact me with any information.

THANKS.

Have you replaced the

Have you replaced the convergence chips and checked the values of the resistors and protective 'pico' fuses around the convergence chips?

Do you have the Service Manual with the schematic that you can check resistor values?

That's where I started.

There is no "default" each tv that is built is converged individually. the autofocus only used the inital settings to help correct convergecne issues as the components an tubes wear.

to get into the service menu with the tv off hit <display><5><Vol Up><Power> that will get you in. in another post around here i gave the details on how to get to the convergece mode in a sony.

Remember that the green needs to be set-up first, all convergence no matter what brand centers around the green, that is you luma

Yeah, I knew that convergence

Yeah, I knew that convergence needed to be done manually for every RPTV, and that I need to do it for this one.

I was just kind of hoping that the defaults would've been a bit closer to where I want them.

:)

The previous owner also had messed up all the convergence settings before realizing that it had a hardware fault, without writing the original values down, so I'm pretty much on my own.

Fortunately, the price was right, and I can take as long as I want to figure out how to get the convergence right.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm seeing something else odd

I'm seeing something else odd.

When I go into the service data, under Category PJE, item 1, "AREA", which is described as 'Model Select (0: GA, 1: US, 2: Europe), it's got 2 (Europe) selected.  When I select 1, the OSD disappears for all of the PJE data.

It looks like I really do want to set it to 1: US, because when I do, the convergence lines appear better than I'm able to get it for 2: Europe, but I can't do the convergence if I can't see the OSD for what value I'm adjusting.

Has anyone seen anything like that before?  Is there some other setting I need to make to have the OSD not disappear on me?

If I don't hear back, I may post this under a new topic, because I don't think it's convergence related.

WHEN YOU GO INTO THE PJE

WHEN YOU GO INTO THE PJE PRESS THE 9 OR 3 KEY I BELEIVE TO BRING UP THE GRID, PRESS IT TWICE TO GET RID OF THE VIDEO BEHIND IT YOU SHOULD GET A CURSOR YOU USE THE ARROW KEYS TO MOVE THE CURSOR AROUND AND THE SELECT BUTTON TO LOCK A LOCATION THEN USE THE ARROWS TO ALIGN THAT POINT.

Thanks.  I only found this

Thanks.  I only found this info last night, but didn't think about it until this morning.

Here's where I found the fairly good instructions:

Thanks for the help and posts from this forum.

Hello,

Hello,
I did get the 2 Sanyo IC's but I can't seem to get the board out. The D board is attached to the B board and not sure how I can get these seperated without messing up. Can someone please send me the instructions as to how can I get this done along with the manual. My unit is KP-65WV600.

Thanks,
Mayank

If I remember correctly,

If I remember correctly, there are a set of straight jumpers from the one board to the other, you need to snap them out and then the boards won't be attached.

It was kind of a pain, especially getting them hooked back up afterwards.

Unfortunately, it's been a year since I fixed my TV (although convergence isn't perfect, it's pretty good, and I'm pretty lazy. :), and I don't remember more details than that.
