sony kp-65ws500 8 blinking lights

OK here's the situation, for about the last 3 months my tv would every once in awhile get a green hue about the entire picture and sometimes even flicker and then the problem would  go away for days. then i started to notice a set of lines  in the shape of a rainbow starting at the bottom all the way to the top about 10 or so lines in all. they were always present  for the last month but only noticeable when the picture was all black or at least dimly lit. then 3 days ago i turned it on and 5 minutes later the screen turned a really greenish hue  evenly washed out across the entire screen  for about 15 seconds and then it flickered  a very bright green flash and went into standby mode with the 8 blinks. now when i turn it on it repeats that scenario every time , perfect picture and sound for about 45 seconds then a gradual full tinting of green then flicker flicker flash and off . then 8 blinks. i have a pdf of the service manual and if I'm reading correctly it is a problem with my D BOARD. first am i correct? can i replace myself and where would i get it? please help Larry as you are my last resort. also is my diagnoses even near correct or am i completely off base? any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. this is a fantastic site and am so glad i stumbled across it.

It will go through the codes for you and show you, most of the time around where the problem is.

Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some sets it is a high voltage error check T8005 on D board

Good Luck and if you have no knowledge of TV repair, play it safe and

call in a pro to assist you in this repair.

Larry my service manual lists

Larry my service manual lists for my unit that 8 blinks is

HIGH VOLTAGE ERROR--T8005 IS FAULTY (D BOARD)

and that 9 blinks is an audio error which makes sense to me as i have never had an audio problem with the unit. as i said in my original post it appears to be a picture problem. as far as my experience in television repair gos you are correct i have none, if i feel i am getting in over my head i will not hesitate to call a pro. i build computers as a hobby so I'm not entirely out of my comfort zone although i don't deal with the high voltages found in this set on a normal basis. also if and when i bring in the pros i would like to already  know what the cause of the malfunction is to more better protect myself.

blited:this makes more sense to me. I have the 8 blink code and a blue screen. No audio problems prior

blited, i have the exact same

blited, i have the exact same tv and exact same problem.  my eight lights didn't show up untill friday night.  i spent saturday morning searching the issue out.  i found this site which has step by step pics of the proceedure.  today i fixed my own issue in 10 mins.  a simple adjustment to the green crt votage knob.  here is the link.

i hope this helps.

I had the same problem, 8

I had the same problem, 8 blink code and screen to blue. I heard D board on this site, but called a repairman. $85 later he said Blue tube shot and green on its way. Sony was not at all interested or helpful. They were not surprised my tubes were out in 4 years, but I was.

I bought a Mitsibishi, last years model, in the box, 57" DLP for $1400. Sound is not as good but you will not find another Sony product in my house.

Larry Dillon
You could try and turn down

You could try and turn down the blue tube control just a tad and see if you can get a little more life.  BTW, how long did you have the Sony TV set? You will be extremely lucky my friend if you get half the life out of your new Mitsubishi DLP set as you did your Sony TV set without having to spend between 250 to 300 bucks. Good Luck though.

Larry, I had the Sony for 4

Larry, I had the Sony for 4 years. If I have to change a bulb on the DLP, at least I can do it myself.

The lack of response from Sony was an insult. I took it all the way and got zero. It 's going to the dump Saturday, you want it?

Larry Dillon
I would love to have it but I

I would love to have it but I live in northern Michigan

You know its funny asi had

You know its funny asi had posted this problem originaly in june and barely got a response except larry. well i ended up replacing the flyback  transformer on my D-Board in early july as i was convinced that was the problem after about 3 weeks of intense internet research. it didnt change a thing but i had read somewhere to try and wiggle the small card at the end of each gun to make sure that there was a good connection on all the pins and bam that worked great, got rid of the fashes and the set turning off all the time. but it still had about 20 wavy lines in the picture that at first you only saw in dark sceens or when there was no signal at all . well now it started again about 4 days ago so i tried lowering the voltage as you suggested to the point i turned it all the way down. the set stays on for about 3 minutes now and turns off. ive just about had it with this set. i will never buy a sony product again and will at all times possible discourage anyone else from doing the same. sony televisions suck only slitely less than sony corperation itself and that is only because i can still use the set as a $4200.00 boat anchor.

Ahh, another happy customer.

Ahh, another happy customer. Sony dump run this weekend...

Larry Dillon
Dump away, If you  really

Dump away, If you  really wanted to repair the set you could.   You would find a way to feasably fix these things but blame the manufacturer and throw away a set that COULD be repaired with a little bit of imagination.  Now this in no means means to insult you, or say anything to put you down, just an observation on someone who ask for help.

sonyjon
 Oh, forgive me for entering

Oh, forgive me for entering your domain, where you gave the incorrect codes btw. The 8 blink was never an audio problem as we of lesser skills knew. When the Authorized Sony Service guy says the TV needs two new tubes "at a cost of more than its worth" I change course. Not all problems are solved on the web, but I find it a useful source of information that helps guide my decisions. I am happy with my new Misibishi, and Sony is happy to have another product at their local recycling center.

This is by no means a personal judgement.....

Larry Dillon
No need to apologize. If you

No need to apologize. If you look at the link above that i gave out, it does say an a blink code could be an audio problem, or could be a bad flyback. These codes are not 100% going to tell you what the problem is and they certainly are not 100% right all the time. These codes and their definitions are taken directly out of the service manual.

blited
yea you are probably rite ,

yea you are probably rite , it is certainly unreasonable for me to think that after spending that much money on a set to expect it to last any longer than 4 years and as far as sony goes i am being a hard on them, after all when i called them about the problem they were kind enough to give me detailed instructions on how to crap in a hat and ware it. you are 100 percent rite i should figure out how to fix it myself and then maybe take out a two page add in the ny times and gush about how great sony is and what a fool i have been. i wonder larry if sony started manufacturing artificial hearts would you be the first in line to get one besed on there steller record on reliability and service.now this is in no means to insult you, just an observation you know.

by the way the addition of  "On some sets it is a high voltage error check T8005 on D board"

is just that an edited addition to your original post that corrected about 2 weeks after several people pointed out to you that the newer models used different codes. you even sent me a private email after my second post insisting that 8 blinks was an audio problem and that 9 blinks was a d-board problem so stop pretending you never made that mistake. we are all flawed , even you sometimes.

that all being said i do appreciate the fact that you take the time to offer as much help as you do but when you respond like that you are insulting and you know it or you would not have denied it in the first place.

Larry Dillon
Yes it is an edited version

Yes it is an edited version but not recent. And yes of course I make mistakes. I never said I did not. Sony has a tendency to change the rules in the middle of the game.  I have found out, mostly by accident this  about Sony. There have been many mistakes with their codes. Even other manufacturers have them. U do however have to agree that Sony Should be a little more sympathetic to their customers.  But their warranty is just that. They cover the tubes for a period of 1 to 2 years depending on the model number. We will be hearing from you in the next couple of years when you get a bill for 1100 buck to replace the plasma or LCD screen assembly.  If you purchase a set now a days without an extended warranty, you will be sorry down the road.

i used to be a huge sony fan.

i used to be a huge sony fan. everything i had was sony (alot) when i had problems with a new blu-ray player, cutomer service with them showed what they really are and what they are really about. i dont want to go into it. its a loooooong story. i have sworn off their products the last few years. love the ps3 though.
but i still have a kp65ws500 that has a screen flash/strobe effect. would like to know what is causing this. tv has less than 30 hours of play on it even though it is now considered an old tv. its in immaculate like new condition otherwise. i would like to fix this problem easy and very very cheap so i can sell it and try to get some of my $3000.00 back. like it is, i would have to sell as parts or trash. can you help? oh and let me add, sony sucks!
