3 yr old tv failed

I have a 3yr old 27 " Sony Wega tube tv that went black.  Warranty is only for picture tube at this point.  Still doesn't work with a new board and the repair man keeps trying to fix it.  It cost $700 and I wonder at what point I say this is costing too much and cut my loss?  Can't afford a new LCD TV at this point.  Suggestions?

If the repair guy has

If the repair guy has replaced the main board and it still isn't working there isn't much left other than the picture tube.  What model is the set?

The model is KV-27HS420.

The model is KV-27HS420.  Sony had me count the number of times the "standby/timer led" light flashed and I can't remember now if it was 5 or 6.  Don't know if that's useful to you.

five blinks means, "White

five blinks means, "White balance failure" (not balanced) and the probable cause locations listed are as follows: 1. Video OUT (IC9001-IC9003) is faulty (C board). 2. CRT drive (IC201) is faulty (A board) 3. G2 is improperly adjusted. 6 blinks, pause, 6 blinks, etc. means "LOW +B OCP/OVP (overcurrent/overvoltage)" and the probable cause locations listed are as follows: 1. +5 line is overloaded (A, B. M boards) 2. +5 line is shorted (A, B. M boards) 3. IC504 is faulty (A board)

I told the repair man the

I told the repair man the number of blinks when he took the board.  Since then I have found an online list of the various repair sites  for the number of blinks. I'm assuming he did take the number I gave him into account.  At the time he didn't think the picture tube was the problem.  I will have to explore this further and find out how much this is costing fo far.  Again any rule of thumb when one should cut their loss and chuck the TV?

If the tech keeps taking the

If the tech keeps taking the board and repairing it, and when he installs it into the TV set, it blows out, the obvious problem is the picture tube is shorted. Is this what you are saying. I can't tell by the thread, you are very frustrated at this point, but how much are you into this repair that's is not working, and is the tech trying to fix this set after you already paid him. We are not I'm afraid getting the complete story here. Please straighten us out on this situation and maybe we can help. Good Luck

Thanks for every ones  help.

Thanks for every ones  help.  I'm going to go to the shop tomorow and find out specifically what has been done and get back to the forum after that.

1. I thought my picture tube

1. I thought my picture tube was still under warranty--which it isn't.  That's why I went to a Sony authorized shop although I didn't have previous experience with the repair man.  My mistake.   My regular repair shop was helping me figure out if his prices were reasonable, which they were.  2. As of today he was making more gueses about what might be wrong and he told me the repairs were low priority as he needed to make repairs and earn income on new customer's work that was clear cut and would work on mine as he had time.   3. At this point I am getting the old chasis back with the old DZ board  (The cost was $45 for home service and  I offered to pay the re-stocking fee for the new board that also didn't work).  My regular repair shop will pick up the whole TV (they don't work with  only the chasis).  There, I will pay $90  to have them pick up and return the TV (all 111 lbs),  do the evaluation, and I won't be low priority!  Thanks for all your comments--I feel I'm in good hands now.

I would report this

I would report this Authorized repair shop to Sony. They would be interested to hear from you. Tell them you trusted their recommendations for a repair shop. Tell them what you have been through. Tell them they should, after all you have been through, replace or repair the set at no charge. Just simply tell the truth the whole truth. Also be nice. You catch more bees with honey.  I have seen people get a new set for letters about their repair shops. Do not leave anything out. Let us know what they say.

Will write Sony once I know

Will write Sony once I know what repairs are needed.  It looks like the old repair man may have done some tinkering with the chasis that may make repairs more difficult.  My service center is ordering a new DZ Board which is out of stock at Sony.  They will  go from there.
