20 gigabite playstation 3 internet hook up

i slept outside for 2 days to get my playstation 3. I got the 20 gigabite playstation 3 and i really want to hook it up to the internet. I don't have money for a long ethernet cable so i was wondering if anybody knew how to take a laptop and hook it to a playstation 3 and somehow transfer the internet from it to the playstation 3 with an ethernet cable from the laptop to the playstation 3

Hi needstvhelp,

Hi needstvhelp,

It is possible to do what you ask through a feature called Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Assuming the laptop is wireless, you will need a crossover Ethernet cable to make the connection to the PS3.

ICS is somewhat limited in the kind of configuration you can do, so your home network gateway needs to not be assigned the internal IP of 192.168.0.1, which most are.

If this sounds over your head, maybe we can think of something else. If this sounds like something you want to try, I'll be here to help you through it.

What do you think you want to do?

what time should i be on so that you can walk me through it. I was wondering also if there was some sort of upgrade or some way that i can fix my playstation 3 so it has wireless internet that doesn't cost over 20 dollars

Well, I can't promise I can

Well, I can't promise I can walk you through it in real time, but I'd be happy to guide you through the process here in this thread as you work through it. As I was thinking about your dilemma, I was going to recommend having you look into a powerline or wireless Ethernet bridge to get your PS3 online. They're a lot easier to set up, but the price will definitely be over 20 bucks. Powerline would be the easiest, as it is simple plug and play stuff, but expect it to run about 80 bucks.

Before you can get started with trying to set up ICS, you'll need to aquire a crossover Ethernet cable. This isn't a regular cable, and not something that you likely already have. Did you get one?

Not correct...the 20GB PS3 does not have built-in wi-fi.
