PanasonicDMREZ45V does setups for no reason. Also decides to rotate TV stations. The useless manual gives no indication. I don't really want to take the sledgehammer to it, but, if I can't find out why, there's no other option, it's me or it.

This sounds to me like a power supply problem. The entire system is controller by a microcomputer. If the supply voltage (5V) should drop to 4.3 or less, the system will enter the state of confusion and all bets are off. Check for bad connection at the voltage regulator first.

Thanks Dan. I forgot to mention that it mostly happened when I stopped a programme or put a tape in. Anyway I did what you said and checked all the wiring to make sure nothing was hanging loose. The scart was a bit out so I pushed it in and waggled a few wires including the power. The aerial is a bit loose, but I've checked since, doing all the things that caused it to flip before, and it seems all right for the moment. Only time will tell. I'm not technically minded and, to tell you the truth, I'm a wee bit scared of anything I can't understand, especially when the instruction manual has been written by Japanese. I got it mainly for transfering tapes to disc - eleven years of grandchildren. The main bugbear here has been the way it divides each tape into sections. I've also got an Acer Aspire 3003LC laptop that has a mind of its own, keeps losing the sound and doesn't like hard work. I know it's not Japanese, Taiwanese I believe, and I bought it in New Zealand, so maybe it's got jet lag. Thanks again for your help. I'll let you know how it goes. Don.
