Help! Older 32 Inch Sony Trinitron Finally Giving Up the Ghost?

We have an older 32" Sony Trinitron (it is a model KV-32S12). It's been a great TV.  It replaced a 20" (?) Trinitron, which had also lasted several years.  We never ever had any complaint about the picture on either of them - always superb. Until now.  The 32" one is doing the exact same thing that the old one did.  It takes forever to turn on.  Black screen for quite some time and then it turns on, turns off, turns on, turns off... for what seems like almost 5 minutes. Luckily then it stays on.  We don't really want to have to buy a new one quite yet.  If I knew what part is malfunctioning, I can call a repair shop to get a ball-park estimate. Can anybody shed some light on this?  Does it sound like a tuner to you possibly?  Signed, Going Crazy in Canada

I doubt the tuner would cause

I doubt the tuner would cause this problem.  The tuner would cause, if it were intermittent, the TV set to come on, but have snowy channels once in a while.   Or no picture, but there would still be light on the picture tube.  When the set goes off, does the green light on the front of this TV set blink some type of code?  These timer lights will blink with most Sony TV sets so that the tech has an idea about in what circuit to start in to troubleshoot.  Your problem sound s a lot like bad capacitors in the power supply, and they have to charge up slowly then the set will come on.  If this is the case, it could be one or a combination of several capacitors in the TV set.  Unless you have the ability to solder and test solid state circuits, play it safe and call in a tech to assist you in this repair.  Depending on how old this TV set is, It should at least be worth an estimate fee.  Good Luck, and let us know how you make out with the repair of this set.

Thanks a bunch, Larry. We'll

Thanks a bunch, Larry. We'll give it a try.  It's been a great TV set and we would prefer to fix it if it's not going to cost an arm and a leg. Much appreciated!  (No green light flashing, just a red one several times. We will have to count next time.)

I have seen this a number of

I have seen this a number of times and it is usually an indication that the picture tube is beginning to fail.  Turning up the screen voltage a bit usually clears this up, but only for a short while.  If you are comfortable working with the back off, try turning the adjustment knob on the flyback slightly clockwise.  This will increase the screen and should clear up the problem.  If this is the case, the picture tube in on its way out and you should start looking for a replacement.

Let us know what you find out.

Actually, once it goes

Actually, once it goes through this flicking on and off bit, the picture is absolutely perfect.  That's why I figured that maybe it's not the picture tube.  So, I assume not much point fixing it if it is a tube going on it?  My son is usually the one that turns it on all the time, so I'll get him to check for flashing lights.  I know the red one flashes several times.  Not sure about a green one.  Thanks, gentlemen.
