Philips magic 5

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but would really appreciate any help given:

Is it possible to bypass the ink film card you have to insert in the Philips fax machines?  Bought Magic 3 film instead of magic 5 and even though exactly the same, machine won't allow me to use fax because it says it has the wrong film in it.  It is all a money making scam!

As unfair as it may be, the

As unfair as it may be, the ink/film market for fax and printing products is pretty strict. If narrowed down to the nitty-gritty, there probably is some small difference between the two films... at least enough to make sure it doesn't work with your model.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure of any way to use what you purchased in a your fax machine. You need the right model film.

Sorry bud.

Speaking of this topic, Kodak is giving the current business model for big printing companies like HP and Canon a run for their money with a new printer line (news story here). Supposedly, the printers will be a reasonable price, and the replacemement cartridges are just going to be ink (no print head replacement every time). This would mean black ink carts would cost $10, color for $15. What do you think of that baggins? Would you be the first to jump to a product like that?

It is about time someone did

It is about time someone did this.  It would cost for the ink if you bought it by the gallon something like 400 bucks if not more.  This is for sure the way printer manufacturers make their money.

Hi and thanks for your

Hi and thanks for your comments - it is a dishonest way to make money!  Philips are removing market forces by making you put a "card" into the machine along with the ink ribbon - the card serves no purpose other than preventing you using other brands (and telling you how many copies you have left on the film, which woudl be achievable without using a card for each ink film!).  I can't quite see how the authorities allow this anti-competative practice to continue.

PS:  the film for the magic 3 and 5 are actually identical - it is the card which is different and without the right card - no print!  I was rather hoping that someone would tell me to "pull the red and blue cables out and joint them together" or some such.  Guess I will have to keep paying their extortionate prices for now!  And yes, Matt, reasonable price of consumables would be a major factor in making a decision about buying a printer!

If I am not mistaking this

If I am not mistaking this fax is a UK model.  If you have all of the settings on this fax machine set to your specs, the machine is defective or you overlooked something.  There should be a help number in the owners manual or take back the unit to the store and exchange it.  There are a ton of settings but there is a quick setup page.  If you did this then I would tend to believe the unit is no good out of the box.  Would not be the first time I have seen this problem.  Good Luck and let us know how you make out with this Fax machine.

Hi there.

I've been trying to tackle the same problem. I know that the Magic 3 has a service code that will disable the card and also allow you to use any old ink film you like. The Magic service codes are like 7117 which will reset the machine totally (but does not disable the card!)

I have the same problem as

I have the same problem as described above: Philips Magic 5, when connecting line the display says 'External Phone', and no dialtone.
The machine works fine in Germany, but here in Ireland (EIRCOM) it doesn't. Technician was here, says line, socket and cable are fine, says Magic 5 must be faulty, which it isn't.
I suspect the line signal here in Ireland is somewhat modified so the Magic 5 internal switch sensor interprets that a connected external phone is connected and is busy.
However, there is no external phone connected at all, and the machine works fine when connected in Germany, I checked.
Any ideas, anyone?
