Hello,
I have got a 42 inch Philips plasma tv model 42pw9982/19. It has a plama monitor and a separate tuner/ amplifier box.
When I connect tv display with tuner box and turn it on, TV initially (for 2-3 seconds) shows some glow and pinkish black striations on the screen (tries to start) and then the screen goes blank with green LED permanatly on on both screen and tuner box. Green lights blinks both on tuner part and the main screen with pushing of remote button but no change in the screen.
Any idea where the problem lies?
How can I test whether tuner/ amplifier is faulty or the display or both? Fan in the tuner/ amplifier box is working and I can see it running.
Thanks in advance.
Hello,
Some more details about this problem of no picture or sound.
I tried connecting a standard crt computer monitor to amplifier/ tuner box unit but it failed to pick-up any signal. I tried both front and rear connections but same result. Should I assume that the amplifier/ tuner box is faulty? if yes, how to check? (Monitor it self is OK as it works fine with computer)
When I start the box, it starts with a reasonable buzzing sound as if some motor is starting or some big system is energizing (this is when Plamsa TV tends to show signs of life and tries to start) but after a few seconds that buzzing sound starts disappearing and only very low level sound of box fan remains there. This powering behaviour remains same irrespective of whether Plasma monitor is connected or not. Lights on box and plasma monitor remains green at all time.
Any clue where to start tracing the problem, may be some weak capacitor, faulty transistor, relay etc. and how to rule-out various possibilities?
Thanks for any assistance.
Most Philips sets have a force on procedure involving jumping some test points out which will confirm that the panel lighting circuitry is operating properly. This is not something a novice can do and should only be done by a qualified tech.
Thank you for you input MOtvGuy. Since tuner/ amplifier box is not showing anything on VGA monitor, it appears that the problem may be with the box. I have also noticed that tuner box fan starts much faster in the beginning (when system tries to start) and becomes very slow and quite when system fail to energies.
Any way of testing output voltages from the box? What values should we expect at each output pin?
Thanks
You'd have to come up with a schematic on the tuner box in order to determine what's failed inside of it. I'm not familiar with the Magnavox/Philips system but often those boxes are propreitary and won't work with anything other than the specific Plasma TV they were designed for. Since that has a VGA output I'm assuming it can be operated as a standalone unit. Get a schematic or take it to your nearest servicer.
