hi, i have the above mentioned model, my problem is i got the tv from a freind of a freind who bought it new, one day it would not display a pic but had sound. he had "some guy" check it out and he managed to get it working but it only displays in "full" mode, so it cuts off the top and bottom of the picture on cable or vid 1,2,3. on component 1 or 2 you are able to switch pic sizes but they dislay distorted or the colours dont lign up. oh and on cable or vid input when you hit the "pic size" button, it says not available. other than that it works well. im very happy with the picture quality on component input, obviously on a wide screen movie there is no issue but for anything else its mildly annoying. if anyone has any ideas i would appreciate them. thanx.
Does the picture look like a 3-D movie that you need special glasses to see the movie correctly? or is the top and the bottom of the picture not showing at all. I am talking in the 4:3 picture mode. If it does look like a 3-D picture, and you cannot setup or adjust the colors or what called the convergence,, then you have a typical convergence problem that occors on allmost, if not all front and rear projection TV sets. The problem is a set(2) of the convergence IC's that go bad. They are soldered into place and not all that hard to change, IF and ONLY IF you have some basic solid state printed circuit board experience, and some soldering and unsoldering experience. If you do not have any experience with this, Play it safe and call in a trained tech. After the IC's are replaced, you will also need to do an alighnment to the convergence so you will need the service manual as well. Good Luck, and let us know how you make out with this repair
hi, thanx for your reply. It is definitly not a convergance problem. on this model there is a "full" mode wich fills the entire screen with your picture, although it cuts off some of the top and bottom of whatever your watching. in "normal" 4:3 mode it displays all the picture but has a grey bar on each side. now MINE doesnt want to allow me to switch picture sizes and is stuck on full mode, so im losing the top and bottom of my tv shows and full screen movies. im wondering if there is some kind of service lock out or way to manually select pic size on the main board or.........?? thanx for any input
You may have what some call a hyper board problem, but Toshiba calls this a scan converter board. Most of these are not available from Toshiba anymore, but most of these scan converter boards are available from ptscorp.com. as a rebuilt. to tell you the truth, most of these scan converters or hyper boards, have problems with the 12 or so surface mounted capacitors on the board. I have seen a couple of these boards that could not be repaired and exibited strange symptoms as you discribe due to the acid leaking from those small surface mounted capacitors, eating away at the board, so the board had to be replaced.
i see, any ideas on the location of this board? also would it be possible to swap this or any other driver board with one from a different model? some of my menus dont have the options that are described in the manual, i was wondering if maybe somone had put a different board in it, perhaps from a 4:3 tv, this would explain some of the issues.
The hyper board or what the service manual calls the scan converter board is located on most Toshiba TV sets, right behind the input panek on the back of the TV set. It is a small board that stands up and has a metal shield around it. The service manual would help you out with this. Make sure the hyper board is bad first by checking all of the capacitors on the board. They are the surface mounted type. if you have no solid state board experience, play it safe and call in a trained tech, perferably an authorized Toshiba tech.
