So my husband just bought a giant used TV. It had problems when we got it, but we figured that even if it does need repairs, it's going to be hard to beat a 65" HDTV for $200. For the record, this is a Mitsubishi HD 1080 Series, 65".
Here's the problem.

We have our Xbox plugged into it at the moment (the problem isn't the Xbox, it's definitely the TV). The top image is what happens when the Xbox goes into it's 'sleep mode', it just makes the screen a bit darker. Once it goes into this sleep mode, the picture looks just fine. But once everything is active, it goes into what the bottom pic shows. It looks like some of the highlights are inverted, like that part of the image goes into negative.
Anyone have any ideas?
The link you left is a dead link my friend, I tried going and it said page not found. Repost the link with the pictures please.
looks like your losing the green color, thats the middle tube. Take the screen off the front and conferm that you are missing the green color
That would make sense. I'll take a look at that.
Better yet, I'll make my husband do it when he gets home. Thanks
After you conferm that there is no green as I said the green is the center tube, I will explain how to test if the picture tube is bad or ity is a drive problem, BUT you or your hubby will need to have some technical experience, NOT alot but some would help.
I'm the husband: I haven't been able to get the screen off, but I can see the green color through the back. There's also a popping sound that comes from the inside that I can hear from the back. It sounds like a short to me, but I'm not sure. I do a lot of computer work, but I've never really messed with a tv and don't know much about it.
This is annoying. It seems like it wouldn't be complicated to fix, especially since the picture is perfect when the screen goes into sleep mode. It also does the same thing with a SNES plugged in during screen fadeouts. It just switches to a nice looking picture for a second and then goes back to the solarized look.
Also, I opened up the back and I think the popping sound I heard before is normal. I just blew it out of proportion when I heard it. So back to the same deal. Any ideas.
New development:
When I turn on PIP the image is perfect. I was running Guitar Hero with PIP mode on so that it was on both channels. The one in the PIP window was a perfect picture while the other made the weird solarize effect. The ability seems to be there to make a nice picture. So what the hell is happening?
You may have some surface mounted type capacitors bad on the PIP board causing the normal video to be bad. Also what happens when you do a PIP swap?
To be honest, if there is a way to swap them I don't know how to do it. I don't think this tv has the option.
The PIP window was also half the screen. So it was the same channel on the whole screen but split down the middle and with one side screwed up. It looked like multiplayer with the left screen all messed up.
The PIP board thing doesn't sound too bad if that's the case. What would it take to fix that type of thing?
check this out my friend: http://www.mcminone.com/search.asp?keyword=PIP+repair&btnSubmit.x=12&btnSubmit.y=1
Do you know where to find more info on this? Before I go plugging in new capacitors I want to make sure that's the problem. Since I've never really done any TV work, I'd hate to get in there and mess with something that doesn't need to be fixed.
You know my motto: If it ain't broke, I'll break it.
What is the complete model number of this TV set?
