Have Toshiba 36" tube type tv-1997 (CF36G55). Picture and sound are intermittant. May stay on 1 minute or 1 day. Vibrations (tapping the chassis will cause on/off malfunction). Have been told tuner problem is possible. Is this likely? How complicated is the replacement? Back of tv is now off. I do not see any burned out circuitry.
You most likely have a number of bad solder joints throughout the set. Carefully remove the chassis from the set and examine the underside of the circuit board. The solder connections should be shine. If you see rings or what appear to be crystal like connections, resolder them. This may fix the problem.

TOSHGONE:
AS ABOVE, YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A, OR SOME BAD CONNECTIONS, THE TOSHIBA MODEL HAS A NUMBER OF UPRIGHT METAL 'CANS' WITH A MULTITUDE OF CONNECTIONS UNDER THE PCB BOARD, IF YOU TRY GENTLY FLEXING THE TOP OF EACH OF THESE, WHILE SOMEONE WATCHES THE PICTURE, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO LOCATE WHERE UNDER THE BOARD THE BAD CONNECTION IS, THEN SWITCH OFF BEFORE YOU SOLDER!
DO THE ABOVE WITH AN INSULATED TOOL, KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM THE INSIDE OF THE TV, VERY HIGH VOLTAGES/ NOT MANY SECOND CHANCES!!!
