my monitor was scratched by my daughter. ive been told the tube needs to be replaced but after many hours searching the net this is not feasable because of the high cost (from $1000 to $1700). the screen obviously has some kind of plastic coating on it because of the way its scratched. does anyone have any suggestions on polishing or maybe replacing the plastic?
Crt monitors are glass. Other than replacing the tube, there is really no way to correct the problem. Most glass repair procedures require a rather high amount of heat. This is a no-go for closed tubes...
Try the following(no guarantee) put a bit of toothpaste ona soft cloth and rub around the scratch area. This may be enough of a polishing operation to clean up most of the scratch. If the scratch is a lot deeper, you can try an automotive windshield repair kit. This is an optically clear "superglue" type stuff. Use the suction cup and inject the solution. When dry, use a razor blade to scrape off the excess and then use the toothpaste to polish.

hey, what have i got to lose right? i know the tube is like a light bulb ie total vacuum inside. but the screen has some kind of plastic coating on it. i can tell from the scratches. theres almost like burrs on the edges of the scratches. i know if it were glass it wouldnt have that.
ill give it a shot, and post results. thanks for your help. i really do appreciate it
I have the same problem with the Trinitron monitor. bicycledr: Did you have any sucess?
yes i did. apparently the monitor has an anti glare coating on it and i was able to peel it off.although it was a little difficult, it came out great, but i had to turn down the brightness a little.
PS! this wont work on a television though because they dont have this anti glare coating on the crt. i also have a 36 inch wega and a 17 inch trinitron tvs. when you do it use a sharp razor and just cut into it around the edges and start peeling it off. its a little tough getting it started but once you start it will come off fairly easily. use the same razor to scrape off the glue left behind. i had mine done in about an hour.
PSS the material is like a really thick piece of window tint.
hope this is of some help. good luck
I have done this and found it eaqsyer to remove the anti-glare coating with a hairdryer while I was pulling on the coating. Came off alot easyer.
