We've recently resorted to watching our SONY television in the VIDEO mode, using our VCR as the tuner.
In this mode the green VIDEO message usually flashes on the screen and infrequently immediately after turning the set ON, there is only a narrow white line across the middle of an otherwise completely black background.
Other than these two or three possibly related issues, all is good.
I'm pretty electronics handy, so are there any suggestions, other than it's time to get a new set?

The video display can only be turned off with the original remote as there will be a button on it called display. Some Sonys do have a display button on the front of the TV set also. The other rpblem is most likely a fault in the vertical sweep circuit or the sweep power supply. the rpoble could be as simple as a bad connection, bad capacitor or a bad vertical output IC. These are all soldered in parts and you will also need a capacitor checker and a multimeter. If you have some tV repair experience, you should first get the service manual so you wont be shooting in the dark with this repair. If you have no repair experience, play it safe and call in a pro to assist you in this repair. Good Luck and let us know if you got this TV repaired.
Unfortunately the VIDEO message usually doesn't turn or stay OFF for long.
I was also looking for clues as to why the set's TUNER failed in the first place and how to repair it. If only it was one of the really old-style tuners.
I'll have to dust-off the multimeter along with the capacitor checker.

The tuner comes as a complete assembly and a company called PTScorp.com can repair it for you or you can get a new tuner from partstore.com
