Pictures to come, but here's the generally gist: I took my Nokia 3650 and my new Dell Axim 50v with me, in lieu of a laptop and the cellphone pairing. I can tell you all a few things you may or may not know about this combo:
- Have your chargers available. I had chargers for both, while a buddy of mine only had his car charger for his phone. He had to watch his usage every day as a result.
- Cellphone signals have gotten dramatically better in Las Vegas since I last visited in 1996 (awhile). I got five-by-five in all but the innermost parts of casinos, and I had 100% coverage in every LA elevator I was in (yes, Jack Bauer's cellphone really does work that well in LA, apparently).
- The Axim 50v kept me connected everywhere, but the Omni Hotel in LA has a disclaimer page that doesn't automatically come up on the device. Manually enetering it did the trick. Coverage was sweet, and strong.
- The Nokia 3650 continues to knock my socks off with its camera. I take some really good candids with it, and although I did miss the zoom of a real camera (especially at the Mets-Dodger games), I got enough quality pics to document the trip well.
- Bejeweled 2 for PocketPC is like crack. You can kill an hour on the plane ride home with it, easily. Also, AvantGo is all right for pulling down some readable content, but I need a PDF viewer and an iSilo analogue, stat.
- Battery life for the Axim 50v with the 2200mAh battery was spectacular. With the WiFi radio on and no power-saving enabled, I played Bejeweled 2 for an hour and only took it down 15%.
Next entry, pics, plus a few more words here and there about microDrives, MMC cards, and why it pays to think very far ahead.
