Using the Slingbox for Surveillance and Security

The Slingbox's primary purpose is to Sling television programming to wherever you are. Yet, there are many undiscovered and creative uses to get more out of your Slingbox.

Even though the Slingbox is optimized for use with cable and satellite set-top boxes, digital video recorders, and DVD players, it is capable of slinging any video source to a remote computer or mobile phone. This opens the door for many surveillance and security applications. Some of which include:

Setup Remote Cameras

Why not use a Slingbox to peek in on the sitter when you and your spouse are out on the town? This way, you can be assured the sitter isn't asleep on the sofa, or entertaining a "special friend", while your kids run rampant around the house.

It's not limited to sitters either. Hide a camcorder and keep an eye on your teens while you're away. If they throw a party behind your back, you'll know with a click of the mouse. Plus, with the quality image of the Slingbox, you'll get to see exactly what's going on in real time.

Remote surveillance isn't limited to just one camera either. Set up a whole series of cameras using a multi channel modulator from Channel Vision to run them on different channels. Using the Slingbox's built in tuner, you'll be able to monitor several cameras with just one Slingbox, and then switch back to your TiVo to watch the current episode of Glee.

Know What Your Kids are Watching

When your kids tell you that they're watching something "parent approved", how can you really be sure? Have you ever wondered if they raid your collection of R rated movies? Are they doing homework or playing games? Slingbox can give you all the answers.

Connect your Slingbox to your TVs MONITOR OUT jack, and it'll Sling whatever is on the TV screen to your remote computer. This way, you'll know if they're watching something they shouldn't be.

How many times have you been called by the little ones to ask for the password to the cable box, so they can watch a show that you'd find acceptable, but is blocked by the cable box? You tell them the password, and change it when you get home, how do you know they didn't use your password to watch something else. With the Slingbox's ability to send remote commands to your device, you can enter the password remotely! They'll never know it, or be able to use it for another show or channel.

Know What Your Children are Playing

The remote nanny capabilities extend beyond TV shows, too. Of course, you've never purchased a copy of Grand Theft Auto or Manhunt for your child's video game console, but who knows what games their friends bring over after school.

Connect a Slingbox to the video output of your child's favorite video game console, and keep an eye on what games they stick in their favorite video game machine. Monitor what they play from a different room, at work, or even in another country!
