Too Much Red in TV Image

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

My Zenith 27 inch TV is showing a lot of red. Is there an adjustment to this?

Answer:

Absolutely. Emphasis on one color or another in a TV imge can be caused by many factors.

First off, some TVs commonly have what's known as "red push". This means that the color decoder in the TV emphasizes red over green and blue. While red is common, some televisions can push blue or green, but most people don't object to this as much as much as red. The other main cause occurs when the color and tint controls are improperly set.

Notice in the image that the woman looks like she's sunburned, and that the red square is significantly more dominant than the blue and green. This is a great example of "red push".

There are a number of ways to alleviate this. One is to have the television adjusted by a technician, but it's not going to be worth it with a TV of your size.

The best thing you can do is adjust the color saturation and tint controls to achieve the desired result. Find the color control in the TV (commonly labled "color" or "saturation", and reduce the overall color saturation. You can also adjust tint more to the green side, but too much will make the image look even worse.

If the television has an adjustment for color temperature, you may want to try increasing the control to a higher color temperature, which will make the image more bluish.
