Renaming Pictures Takes Forever!

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

I have a Nikon 4800 digital camera, new user.... I am taking pictures with it and setting up my web site shopping cart. When taking pictures and saving in JPG format and then importing them into the browser to post them on the Internet, it will only take the picture if they are in jpg (lower case format). I take 60-100 pictures at a time. So other then re-naming them after I have saved them (very time consuming). How do I save them so there so they are already in lower case format? Please help!!!!

Answer:

I do not know any way to change how the camera names images. So, if it uses all caps to save file names, then that's what it's going to do. Fortunately, renaming pictures does not have to be a time consuming one-at-a-time process. There are several free utilities available that can help you rename groups of files quickly.

In fact, a program called Rename It 3.05, from KoBoNet Software Develop Team, is a fairly simple free program that allows you to mass change file extensions without having to completely rename all the files. You can download the program here.

You can rename all of your pictures from .JPG to .jpg in one click. To rename the extension on a group of files in KoBoNet, follow these simple directions:

  1. Make sure all of the pictures you wish to change the extension on are in the same folder. If they are in different folders, you will need to repeat this process on every folder.
  2. After first launching the program, navigate the directory to the folder where your images are stored. The file names should appear in the bottom-left box.

  3. Click the tab in the upper right that says "Massive"

  4. Towards the bottom, click the link that says "change to extension" (This allows you to change the extension without having to change the filename).

  5. Type "JPG" in the box labeled "From Extension", and "jpg" next to the box labeled "To Extension".

  6. Click the "Rename" button, and moments later all of the extensions are in the lower case format you need!

Though Rename It 3.05 clearly indicates it is an unregistered product, it has a never-ending evaluation trial, so it's considered free. Since everyone likes to have alternatives, there is another free product called "A.F.5 Rename your files" that offers a little more functionality, but is also harder to use.
