My new iPod Shuffle

I just received a 512 MB iPod Shuffle and after having it a week, I can say that, with a few modifications, I would be ready to replace my iPod Mini 4GB with it.

Re-read that last paragraph again. I'll wait. Done? Good.

Now, for those of you who don't know, the iPod Shuffle is a flash based, screen-less version of the iPod. It comes in two sizes: 512 MB & 1GB.

First, what I like about the Shuffle:
1. Compact - I can fit it in my pocket without "attracting" looks
2. Key Fob - The Shuffle doubles as a USB key fob drive. The built in usb adapter also means no need to carry around a cord.
3. Battery Life - Since it's flash based & has no screen, the battery life is amazing. Plus, it charges from the USB port on your computer. So, if you are like me and are using it as a USB Fob, you don't have to worry about making sure you charge it.
4. It's simple - Through a wonderful use of controls and flashing, colored lights, Apple was able to distill all of the Shuffles functionality onto on, 2x2 inch card. That's it.
5. Accessories - I know, I know, it sounds stupid. BUT, the Shuffles' use of the cap that covers the USB connection is one of the little "nice" things that you will love. Want to know what to do to connect the Shuffle to a necklace to wear around your neck? No problem, just pop off the USB cab, and snap on the lanyard. Now, compare this with my crappy Rio flash player, which must be "snapped" into its' travel case, and you can see my point.
6. Cheap - And I do mean cheap. Compare the $99 you pay for the 512 MB version with the $150 you pay for a Philips iRiver ( 512 MB ).
7. Dual Functionality built in - iTunes allows you to customize the Shuffles' storage settings. You can set aside half the room for data and half for music, or you can find a % that works for you. Either way, there is no "guessing" if you have room on your Shuffle for songs or not.

Ok, and now for the things I don't like. Here is a list of things that I would need before I can replace my current iPod Mini with the Shuffle:

1. Larger capacity - At least 2GB. 1GB isn't enough when you realize that you will be using is as your thumb drive too. 2GB = 1GB music & 1GB data. Nice and easy.
2. More than 1 playlist - I would like the ability to have more than the 1 playlist that the Shuffle supports now. I like to listen to albums, and it would be nice if I could cycle through each album as a playlist. It's not a big requirement, just something that would be REAL nice.

And that's it. 2 things. That's how close Apple is from me replacing my Mini with the Shuffle. I can only hope that either of these are coming down the line, because it's just not fair that I have to carry around a iPod Mini on my belt while his young, cooler brother taunts him from my pocket.
