My Camera Wants to Format My Flash Card

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

My camera tells me it wants to format when I switch it on, and if I do so, it will delete all my pictures. What can I do to prevent this and how do I solve this problem? It wont even let switch on unless I format it?

Answer:

Unfortunately, it's possible that the memory card has become corrupted and unreadable by the camera. This would force the camera to format the card in order to use it. If this is the case, there is probably little you can do to retrieve your pictures.

The one thing I can recommend is removing the memory card from the camera, and inserting it into an external flash card reader. These are small, inexpensive devices that connect to a computer's USB port, and will allow you to transfer images to the computer without having to use the camera.

If the images are retrievable, move them to the computer in this manner. You can then format the flash card in the camera the next time you need to use your camera.

If all fails, it may be possible the flash card is defective. Test thoroughly before using.
