My Bookshelf Stereo Stopped Working!

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

My RCA RS2620 5 disc shelf mount stereo just stopped producing sound. Everything seems to be working but no sound. I carefully moved the unit about ten feet to a new location and it stopped playing (sound).

Any suggestions?

Answer:

Haven't you ever heard that a bookshelf system will break if you move it more than 9.5 feet? Just teasing, but moving it could be the culprit here.

  1. Most bookshelf systems rely on plasitc spring clips (or locking clips on some other models), on both the back of the main unit and speakers, to grasp the ultra-thin speaker wire. They could have easily pulled out of the clips if it was moved. As you check your speaker wires, make sure that the insulation on the wire is stripped far enough to not interfere with the wire in the jack.

  2. If the wires are good, check your input source to be sure you've selected CD, radio, tuner, or AUX. You can cycle through these options by using the source button.

  3. Make sure the mute is not engaged.
