Image Tilting & Bending on New TV

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

Hi! I just bought a 29 in. JVC AV-VT31 TV. At first, the picture is normal but after three weeks the picture is starting to tilt. The TV has a feature to correct this, but it doesn't help. I tried to use it to correct the problem but the picture looks stretched down at the bottom and at the top from the edges of the screen. Can you help me? How can I correct this? Please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Answer:

If the tilt correction feature is not enough to correct the problem, you'll need to have a service man adjust it in the TV's service menu. It's not uncommon for a new TV to require some adjustments in the first 30 days of use. Provided you obtained the TV through an authorized source, these adjustments will be covered under the TV's factory warranty.

As far as the stretching goes, that could be a few things. The first thing I would try is reducing the television's picture control (contrast). The out-of-the-box settings normally have this control set to its maximum value, which can cause the image to bend the way you've described due to power supply limitations. I personally have an 5 year old 19" Magnavox with the same issue. Reduce the value 25 to 50 percent, and this should go away. If not, have the service man adjust it while fixing the tilt issue.

While you're trying to get the TV picture how you like it, take some time to adjust the TV's picture controls to get the best image possible. Check out the article "How to use your televisions video controls" for a step by step guide.
