Finding an MP3 Player in My Computer

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

Hi, I purchased the DFP70/DFP72 MP3 player AVC Technology and need help transferring files. The manual says that once I plug in the USB that the "removable disk" should load and a folder should than open. I do not see the folder...all I see in "My computer" is the removable disk E. I tried to contact them thru email but no-one is answering...please help.

Answer:

Based on the information you have submitted, everything looks A-OK. However, it looks like you've been hit by the "poorly written manual" syndrome.

The manual states that the folder should automatically open when the device is connected to the computer, which is not true. Whether or not Windows will automatically open the drive in Explorer depends on how your preferences have been setup prior to connecting the device.

You see "Removable Disk E:" in "My Computer", which means that Windows has properly recognized it as a storage device (a device that holds data), and assigned it a drive letter, which will vary depending on how many different drives are in the computer. Windows treats these devices as generic storage devices, simply because all they do with the computer is move data back and forth, like a floppy drive or USB thumb drive.

If you double-click on "Removable Disk E:" Windows will open that storage device. Within it, you can move music into it like you would transfer files from one hard drive to another (like dragging files to it or copying and pasting).

hi i just bought a s/n:5510436 from a friend but when i hook the usb cable to my computer nothing comes up i cant even find the device on my computer what can i do to put music in this mp3 player?

Many MP3 players these days no longer support direct file transfer through Windows Explorer, or oftentimes need to be put in a different mode (model specific). If you don't see your Plays For Sure MP3 player in My Computer, launch Windows Media Player and hit the Sync tab. You should see your player there, and be able to sync music to it.

I just bought my girlfriend a mp3 player a scandisk clip and when i plugged it in it says its connected but my computer wont reconize the device and I can't trasfer the music to the device. I tried looking for an extra E drive but nothing showed up.Can anyone help? Thanks

If you don't have the Sync tab, then you need to upgrade to Windows Media Player 10 or greater. WMP 9 should also work, but it's a tab on the left called "Copy to CD or Device"
