Ask the Experts: How Do I Put Pictures Back on to My Memory Card?

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

I recently bought an HP Photosmart R717 digital camera. I have a 256 MB memory card; the camera is 6.2 MP, and so the card holds about 80 pictures. Each time I take pictures I upload them onto my computer, but I think I'm supposed to delete them off the memory card after I upload them. I know that to print the pictures, you can take the memory card to a printing kiosk. So, if I delete the pictures from the memory card after I upload them onto the computer, at some point can I load them back onto the memory card so I can take the memory card out of the camera and print off the pictures? If yes, how do I go about loading them back onto the memory card? I know I could print them from my actual printer, but the quality just isn't as good.

Answer:

Your question is a fantastic one, and no doubt one that many digital camera owners have wondered. For those picture perfect moments, a professional printed picture usually looks better than a self-printed one.

After you have finished taking pictures, you should delete them off of the card and store them on a computer or CD. This way, your card has space to take more Kodak moments. Suffice to say, flash media formats are not a cost effective form of long term storage, because without removing images from the card, you'll wind up spending thousands on memory cards.

To answer your question directly, you can put your pictures back onto the memory card. You may be able to do this with the supplied software and accessories with your camera, but there are external devices that make this process much easier.

Since your camera supports SD or MMC external memory cards, you should consider investing in an external memory card reader. You can easily find one that reads and writes to both formats. This inexpensive piece of gear allows you to remove the card from the camera, and transfer photos without using the camera or any proprietary software. In fact, when connected in this way, you can move images back and forth all you like in the same way as you would copy and paste files into different folders on your computer.

This way, if you decide you want to take your pictures to a photo kiosk, you'll be able to move your photos back onto the card without any hassle. After you get your new card reader, you should write your own "how-to" article about setting it up and using it to help others that are facing the same dilemma.

All you need to do to put the pics back on the card is right click on the pic>select copy> open the location of your card>right click and select paste. Yes it's really that easy. I take 3,000 pics every week and this is how I transfer from card to pc and back to card again. You do not have to use the camera software to do the transfers.

Why cant things be easy, technology is soooo damn frustrating!!! I have a digital picture frame, and pictures i have taken in the past are now on my computer, but in order to get them back onto the frame i need them back onto the memory card, which is near impossible, and surely not as easy as a simple click and drag... NO no no, now i have to re-instate the flux capasater and modulate and ion generated impact disprupter and yada yada yada, blow my brains out all over the monitor screen..

Yes it is as easy as a click. People try to make things harder than it is. If your PC doesn't have a card reader installed , then pick one up for about $10

is there anyway to get the pictures back onto the memory card without a card reader?

Yes, as long as your computer sees your camera as an attached device when plugged in via USB. Plug your camera into a usb port and go to my computer and see if your camera is listed among the icons. Note the drive letter of the camera or the drive letter of the card in the camera. Then just right click on a pic....click send to...click that drive letter and let the transfer complete.

Note: Card readers are very cheap (around $10) and this is the easiest way and least time consuming way to transfer pics.

It certainly is that easy my friend. I transfer pics daily in this manner. Just a feew clicks or a simple drag to the open window of that memory card. A simple copy and paste will achieve the same effect. It's just that darn easy.

Right click on any picture you have....select copy.... now open your memory card in another window...in the blank space of the memory card window>right click anywhere....select paste....and watch the transfer happen....can take up to five minutes depending on picture size...You can even move more than one at a time...IT IS THAT EASY FRIEND!

Use a card reader and not your camera and it will put the image on the card. I edit all the pics I send back to my card, but I use a card reader. Thay are very cheap. Walmart has them for 10 to 20 dollars. Any reader will work as long as it is for your card. The package states what knid of card it will read.

I have been trying to put my pictures back on my memory card from my computer for weeks and nothing is working. its so frustrating!!! I open up the picture folder and drag them onto the memory card, it says and shows that the pictures are there but then when i put the memory card back in my camera the pictures i loaded are not there. what the heck is going on =(???????????

Try viewing them through the card reader first. Sometimes when you transfer your pics to PC it changes the format of the pics. Especially if you've edited them. May no longer be supported to view with the camera. Put the card back in the card reader and see if you can view your pics. If you can then they are there and not supported for camera view. If not then they didn't transfer back to the card.

If they are there then just take the card to a kiosk and print the ones you want. It really is that easy friends.

thanks xopenx i understand what you are saying but it doesnt go on my memory card. someone at work mentioned how it might just not show on my camera but it might be on the card since the camera might not be able to read the file so he said to just take the memory card to the kiosk and the pictures should be there so i will try that....

i have a memory card that i had deleted pictures from and it doesn't show on my camera but they pop up on the kiosk any way to delete these a different way?

The advice in the article above is relevant if you wish to load photos on a memory card to take to a store printing Kiosk or other PC, not if you want to see all your photos on your camera's viewscreen again.

A digital camera formats a memory card into a specific structure, and contains files and information other than "just" the photos you take. If you look at this structure in Explorer, you typically see something like two folders at the root level (DCIM and something else) and if you look inside each you'll see several different files. This structure and other files are required by your camera if you want to view these photos using your digital camera.

If you believe you someday might want to load photos on your camera to VIEW on your camera, you need to copy off the entire folder structure from your memory card. When you load them back on, you load the whole thing. Note that you cannot (with most cameras) combine photos from other shooting sessions when you load them back onto the card. What you copy off is exactly what must go back on.

my friend deleted all my pictures off my memory card by accident. They are already on my computer but i want them back on my camera so i can view them when i take my camera over to see friends to show them whatever it is i might want. I transferred photos from my dads memory card onto my computer using my USB. When he took the camera back they were not on the memory card. So I tried to transfer the photos back to the memory card but was unsuccessful. I shut down my computer and today when I turned it on I cannot find his photos. I am very upset and need some help. Have I lost these photos?

When you say you "transferred" them back to his card, how did you do it? If you copied and pasted, they're still there on your PC, and also on the card. If you cut and pasted, then they're no longer on your PC

In any event, even if you cut and pasted, the photos are likely still on the card, but the camera won't pick them up wihout the associated files needed by the camera (see my post above). If you connect this card to a PC with a card reader, these images will likely be there.

Is there an easy way to take photos already printed and have them copied back onto a memory stick to play on the tv? I have a reunion and everyone is bringing old pictures and I would like to display them on the usb input on the tv.

I want to pictures on amemory stick. It does not have a place to copy & paste. So how do I get them on the stick. I formated it first. Help I don't know how to do it.

I would like to know if with my memory card I can get pictures off of my digital frame and back on to my card so I can print them?

How do I get my pictures from my digital photo frame back on to my memory card?

When I “cut” documents (or folders) off of my computer and place them onto my external hard drive, are the documents still traceable or retractable form my computer… if my external drive was to become damaged?

That article didn't help me at all, I need to know how to put some pictures from my pc back to my phone, yes i have an external memory card, I did this one time before, putting pictures from my phone onto my pc, and then the pictures were back on my phone again, but I can not remember how I did it, Pleae help.....

i've been trying to put photos off my computer that are off my phone onto my camera and i cant work it out.. ive found my camera in my computer and opened the files and tryed to drag a photo in there or copy and paste it but it says error the files you are trying to copy are not allowed on this device or something like that.. ive done it before but i cant remember how..

When I trasnferred photos and videos from my sony Cybershot to my new PC, it appeared they all transferred over and I closed out the software. But when I went into look at the photos I noticed that 36 of the 372 photos or videos were blank and when I clicked on them a pop up said 'would you like to try to find the appropriate software to open this photo' and it gave me an option to search on the interent. Some, of Both photos and videos, are correctly downloaded, so its not just one or the other thats not working right. but all the photos and videos were taken on the same cybershot camera, so it doesnt make any sense that some are opening with this software and others arent.

I didnt change any settings throughout the period I was taking the photos. I used to download these photos from the same camera to my old pc, this is the first time on the new toshiba pc, so I dont know if that has something to do with it or not. However I was using the Sony software to download them onto the old computer and I this time downloaded the pics from camera to pc using windows preinstalled software to do it. Again, not sure f that had anything to do with it. Unfortunately I have already deleted all of my photos in the camera and I need to do something to try to get these 36 photos to open. Can you help? Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can send my way....
